1.) Swamp Fox - 05/05/2015
When I first saw this picture (credited to a Deer & Deer Hunting staffer, but I don't know if it's him in the pic) my first thoughts were of the several things I consider wrong with it.
But then I thought maybe I should dial it back a notch and find out if anyone shoots (and shoots well) with this kind of anchor. Just curious, I guess. 2.) bluecat - 05/05/2015
When you anchor like that are you able to look through your peep? Seems like the string is on a different plane.
That draw length would need to be shortened considerably in my opinion. 3.) Swamp Fox - 05/05/2015
I guess you'd have to be able to see through your peep but I agree it seems off-line from your eye. Maybe that's where pulling the string so hard into your face comes in LOL. I can't imagine all the bad things that does to the string upon release, not to mention the arrow vane in your mouth.
You can't tell what his release hand anchor is, really. Could be thumb or knuckle on the back of the head, maybe the side of the finger on his ear. Seems not as solid as it could be from the picture, but maybe it feels different from what it looks like. It appears the release is not being overly man-handled by the release hand, which is something I had to learn not to do way back before most releases pivoted to reduce torque. But it still may be better to loosen up? I'm of two minds on the draw length. First, if that were my bow with the way I anchor, the length would be too long. On the other hand, if I anchored the way he does in the picture, maybe that length works for him. But on the other hand of the other hand, isn't it more standard to line up nock below the eye/in the corner of the mouth, or at least much closer to that line than is shown here? There's some good common sense in this article regarding archor points and draw lengths: http://www.huntersfriend.com/compound_bow_draw_length_discussion.html 4.) bluecat - 05/05/2015
If he is using a vane as one of his anchor points I wonder if he is using a dropaway. I would rather my index vane be straight up. Using a vane as an anchor also requires that the vanes are rotated the same for every arrow.

Wow! I admit that I'm cheating my draw length a bit on the long side but at least my hand is touching my face! I actually anchor just below my ear on my jaw but I make sure not to have the string digging into my face. I'm definitely not perfect but I don't think it's too critical to say his anchor is messed up.
6.) bluecat - 05/05/2015
I didn't know they made peeps that big. LOL!
7.) Swamp Fox - 05/05/2015
Good point about the vanes. When I shoot feathers I have to watch this. I never had a problem with feathers scratching a mask, for some reason, but sometimes I would tickle my whiskers loudly if I was bare-faced (meaning no mask). Maybe I just had an odd arrow or two, but the lesson always stuck with me to try to turn my feathers just so.
I think this year I'm going to try to get away from a face mask unless it's buggy. For some reason last year my trusty 3/4 net started to annoy me. I've used the same style for 25 years so I don't know why I'm so fussy about how it feels now. I think it does mess with my sense of balance when standing on a small platform, though. Something about depth perception, I'm guessing. Anyway, seeing if I can reduce the facemask annoyances that are suddenly in my head is one of my big projects this year. LOL I've never had the headnet get in the way of a shot, though. You hear these bad news reports about people shooting their headnets off with the bowstring, and I'm always like, "How the hell did he do that?" LOL 8.) Wild Bob - 05/05/2015
"Kill him."
"Burn him at the stake." LOL. :-) IMHO, if it works for him...shoot away. My thoughts are; if this guy has experience and has arrived at that style by trial and error or preference, then great. Now obviously, I'm not advocating that anyone start out shooting by not following the tried and true methods of solid form...but some of the most accomplished athletes have quirky styles or ways of doing things that your average coach wouldn't teach a beginner. I mean look at Bubba Gump! :wink OK, I'll shut up now. 9.) bluecat - 05/05/2015
Okay Dick Fosbury, we see your point. LOL!
10.) Wild Bob - 05/05/2015
My eyes must be bad...I use a peep exactly like the one he is using in the picture. I've tried using a smaller one, but I didn't like how much it obstructed my overall sight picture of the target.

HAhahahhaha! I've been called at lot of things...but never Dick Fosbury.

Well, I'm glad I might not be too critical here. I'm trying to be a nicer person this month, LOL.
Somebody I know--and maybe it's JB or maybe it's Dino-- has that high release hand and it always looked funny to me but they seemed like better than average shots when I was with them at Battle Mountain. I never paid attention to exactly how they anchored, but I thought my own anchor was high until I saw them, LOL. (I put my index finger knuckle in the pocket behind the earlobe.) As far as big peeps go,, you should see what I used to have on my night-hunting bow, LOL. An open-bottomed triangle that was at least as big as a quarter, probably bigger. I also had the largest size for a while, which was maybe the height of a half-dollar, LOL. It shot decently but not great and I finally took it off because I couldn't get it to sit properly in the string. 13.) Swamp Fox - 05/05/2015

LOL...When I saw that, I thought he meant Fearless Fosdick, from the Lil Abner comic....: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearless_Fosdick 14.) Wild Bob - 05/05/2015
Wonder what the two little thingies are on the top of his fedora?? Is there a story behind those?

Huh! Never noticed that. Now I'll have to look into it, LOL Fearless Fosdick was supposed to be a parody of Dick Tracy, so maybe it has something to do with that. I used to read Lil Abner when I was a kid. Not sure I can say I always knew what was going on in it, though, LOL. 17.) Swamp Fox - 05/05/2015

The way he's all worked up about beans, he must have been a Texas chili chef on the weekends... :wink 18.) Hunter - 05/05/2015

I guess it is because of the sharper string angle at full draw. I have to have my peep higher on the string also |
