38spl or 9mm WHADYA THINK.
2.) Forkie McRut - 01/07/2015
why not both?
3.) Swamp Fox - 01/07/2015
Good point.
.38 spc/.357 makes a decent trail gun, which is important to me but not to the majority of handgun buyers. I think the weight/bulk of a revolver that can really take a lot of .357 mag shooting and do it well probably drives many people to prefer 9 mm for a lot of ("constant" or "consistent") carry ..assuming all other things are equal, which they're not, LOL. I look at them as two completely different calibers/guns for two completely different needs. I guess if we're strictly talking self-defense, though, there's no getting around the fact that some guys just like revolvers, period. 4.) bluecat - 01/07/2015
Swampy summed it up well.
Ruger does make the sp101 357 3" that is really a pretty good option for concealed carry for those that want a revolver. If it's what I'm thinking, I held it in my hands and thought it would work pretty well. 5.) Swamp Fox - 01/07/2015
Who's a Ruger fan and who's an S&W fan when it comes to revolvers, especially in .357 mag.?
6.) Swamp Fox - 01/07/2015
D, I just noticed that you didn't ask anything about .357 mag in your original post...Didn't mean to hijack. I just think .38 spc/.357 mag when I hear ".38 special" and that's jumping to conclusions.
Apologies. 7.) Swamp Fox - 01/07/2015
About the only .38's I've ever shot were snubbies and I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with them, from the inside. That was quite some time ago, LOL.

I was thinking of the standard 38spl +p. seemed like a carry type of a topic. There's always the street vs field wepon thing. kinda depends on the barrel length.
although you don't see any 9mm with anything more than a 3-4" barrel in a semi auto and hardly in a revolver eventhough they have 9mm revolvers. Then there's the 38 super that has all but dissapeared. what's up with that? 9.) bluecat - 01/07/2015

Love the Ruger GP100 .357. Big ol' block of stainless steel. Love the look and the ruggedness. 10.) Deerminator - 01/07/2015

Which ever shoots better. Both are excellent firearms. 11.) Swamp Fox - 01/23/2015
Deerminator, you should ask Alex to put this in the general forum Guns and Rifles section, or whatever it's named ....It's in the classifieds now, by mistake, I'm sure...Probably why it's not getting more comments...Well, besides the lack of members who post anything, LOL...

Then there's the 38 super that has all but dissapeared. what's up with that?
I think it's somewhere in the three-or four-inch barrel area before the .38 spc gains anything over the 9mm, which kinda puts the kibosh on a deep-concealment revolver having any advantage over a deep-concealment 9, even if everything else were equal (which it's not, LOL). I believe that takes into account +p ammo, but I could be wrong. It's the rule of thumb I've always heard, and as far as I know there are not fantastic new developments in .38 spc performance ammo (the way there have been in .380 ACP) in the last 10 years, say. But I quit paying attention to revolvers about that time anyway, so what do I know? Especially since my deal with them was always for trail use rather than for social work, as they say. I guess I could have run up on somebody all jacked up on Mountain Dew, but that was never really my concern. I always looked past .38 spc. for the woods is my point, though nowadays I can see where I might not do things the same way today. Is there such a thing as +p+ in .38 spc., and if so, would you want to shoot it in a concealable revolver? 13.) Swamp Fox - 01/23/2015
....
14.) Swamp Fox - 01/24/2015
Okay, answered my own questions above on the +p+ for .38 spc. ...Yes, and No, LOL.
D, here's something I found on the .38 Super. Also, good news: Sig chambered the .38 Super in their 220 back in the day, so if you can find one.... I'm gonna dive for more...Don't put any kinks in my oxygen hose... [I]It appears that the truth is .38 Super can be found in a few loads where it is more powerful than 9mm, or at least faster. At this point, an advantage that the Super has over the 9mm is missed: While the 9mm can match the .38 Super in some loads, these are maximum effort, maximum pressure loads. Probably out of concerns over older .38 ACP pistols, I do not believe that the Super is loaded to the same levels of performance other than by Corbon and perhaps some smaller makers. Were this done, I do believe that the Super would consistently come out on top in this ballistic comparison. In factory trim, the .38 Super has much potential that's not yet been exploited. The 9mm is probably about as "hot" as it can be unless some new, "super powder" is discovered. Observations: Prospective buyers have considerably less choice in pistols chambered for .38 Super compared to 9mm. Either caliber can be had in some makes of 1911 pistols and the Super is available in the SIG-Sauer P-220 as well as some of the Tanfoglio Witness-line pistols. 9mm is all over the map with pistols from 6" 1911's to small handguns like the Glock 26. (FWIW, the Glock 26 with its short barrel gets almost the same velocities as the service size 9mm's with some loads, a testament to the research done on the 9mm that the Super has not been afforded.) The physical size of the Super limits its being offered in truly compact handguns compared to the significantly smaller 9mm. Another factor to consider is that 9mm and 9x18mm Makarov are probably the least expensive centerfire handgun rounds to be found. Even in its generic form the Remington UMC ball loads cost around $15 for fifty, compared to the normal $5 to $7 per box of 9mm FMJ. Here you go, D. This Taurus is what you need:
I don't see .38 Super in Taurus' current line-up, but maybe I missed something. (I also looked at Colt a few days ago and didn't see anything there, either. Again, just a quick look, though.) Good article on the Tanfoglio Witness pistol via EAA importers: http://tacticalgunreview.com/gun-review-eaa-witness-38-super/ Safety notice for certain Witness pistols: http://www.tanfoglio.it/eng/usa-market-safety-notice.php This may be where to get your .38 Super pistol: http://eaacorp.com/hand-guns/ Okay, I'm coming up to the top now to decompress... 18.) I like the 357 and am in the market for an sp101, in a 6" barrel.
44 caliber is a favorite of mine. 26.) Swamp Fox - 01/25/2015

I would guess that the lack of ammo sales leads to the evential demise of certain caliber guns |
