anyone got any tips on spotlighting rules. do you keep the spotlight on during the whole calling sequence I don't think I can spotlight from my truck ..cant find any rules regulations on spot lighting in Nebraska. I have a fox pro spit fire and an old mojo decoy that looks like a rat and a gerble cross breed..

LOL...
I had a conversation with someone a few years ago and remember that I was surprised that the rule was that you could not spotlight from or with a light attached to a boat or motor vehicle. Apparently they want you to walk a few yards and then the light's OK...Maybe it's for your health. You should probably eat more vegetables, too. What little I know about coyote hunting, the light is reserved for locating them and lighting them up just before the shot. I don't know that anyone keeps the lights on during the calling sequence. 3.) crookedeye - 01/04/2015
I always like spotlighting..back when I was obh's age we were spotlighting deer in a field one time..you no just to see whats out in the field.. it was bow season and I don't think we had a bow in the vehical, to make a long story short the game warden followed us all the way to are trailer..he seemed like he was pissed, I was thinking whats the big deal..
I like to see whats out there at night.. can you spotlight deer at night in fields from youre truck? i'm sure he thought we where poaching stuff like that don't even enter my mind.. 4.) crookedeye - 01/04/2015
i quess its legal as long as you don't have a 30 30 and a bloody knife in the truck..

Spotlighting laws here (North and South Carolina) are fairly cut-and-dry and pretty well spelled-out. The rules for hunting with lights have changed a little (finally!) over the past few years because of the rise of coyotes and feral hogs, though, and they'll change some more, so anyone visiting should bone up. Also, be aware of what weapons and ammunition you are not allowed to be in possession of at night.
As far as just spotlighting deer goes, though, in most NC counties it is a complete no-no. There is a block of counties along the coast and neighboring those counties where it is legal to spotlight til 11 PM. In SC, a landowner or leasee with permission can spotlight as long as he has no firearm. If I recall, "possession" is only vaguely defined, or maybe not defined at all, so I wouldn't want to get rolled up on even with a firearm locked in a gun safe bolted to the bed of a truck having just swallowed the key. No sense gambling that the game warden had a fight with his wife that day. So, bottom line: if you have a handgun or your squirrel rifle, muzzleloader or a little scattergun for snakes in the vehicle you are SOL, forget about a centerfire rifle. However, the good news is that you can spotlight with land ownership or permission if all you have with you is your bow. I'm just taking a wild guess because I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'll bet spotlighting is completely out on SC public land. 7.) Swamp Fox - 01/04/2015
I have one spot that might be worth coyote hunting this winter. I need to learn the territory anyway.
Let's hear everyone's recommendations for mouth calls, electronics and decoys. :pop: 8.) crookedeye - 01/04/2015
I have this one spot if the winds right, over looking a creek bootom..i'm at least 40 ft above the creek maybe 80 for all I no..thinking about setting up the FoxPro and the decoy and climbing up the hill..theres only a couple ways the coyote can come in..
if that don't work I can switch to my coon fighting tape..maybe shoot a coon . 9.) Swamp Fox - 01/04/2015

In order to hunt the coyote you need to think like a coyote

Dogs and small children seem to understand me, but I don't think that means I understand coyotes.

Here's a good article on shotgun coyote with some info on chokes and loads. Be sure to read the comments section.

night hunting is the way to go I think..i havnt even tried seriously yet.. back when I went antelope hunting with dano and Kenny them two actually went coyote hunting in Nebraska if I can remember right and dano said the yotes just came in fast and close ..so a shotgun I think would be the best choice..
I think a turkey choke would work just as good with lead shot.. |
