Discuss what's on your wish list, what you're interested in, and what you've acquired in recent history. Feel free to post reviews for your fellow internet hunters. Ask your questions so that If anyone's going to Cabela's they can check it out for you. :wink
I put this in Podunk so that those of you who are interested in something other than hunting and fishing gear can get your licks in, too. I can tell you the George Foreman Grill is awesome, if anybody's wondering. 2.) bluecat - 12/10/2014
Okay fast fingers. I still owe you a review of the harness system. I don't want to overload the website so I've been waiting.

Cool. I was wondering how you liked it and what tweaks you might have made. I'll post some stuff as I get a little time to get into detail. I'm actually trying to get back in the woods right now. The rain has finally moved out and there's still the possibility of a trickle rut here for a while longer. 4.) bluecat - 12/10/2014

I had to go to the big city today, so I stopped in at Bass Pro to look at a few things. Unfortunately, this store doesn't have as much stuff on display as Richmond or Charlotte, I don't think, which is another reason that we're all panting for Cabela's to open in 2015.
Let me tell you, these people at BPS have MAD inventory control skills :re: Zero .22 LR ammo, and little or none in other popular or semi-popular calibers. If you shoot .270 Win. or 7 mm. Rem Mag you're golden, though. Or if you need some slippers or jerky.(By way of full disclosure, I have been waiting for 9 months for Cabela's to come up with some .25-06 they advertised, and they put me through about half that agony to get some turkey loads one or two years ago.) I paid about $7 more than I should have for a box of quarter-bore Federals just because the ammo was right there in front of me, and to get it for $27 a box on short notice involves a long drive or calling in a favor. I was hoping to look at some ladder stands, but they didn't have the one I was interested in on display. It's in their catalog, though, along with many other stands not available to be handled in the store. However, they did have some signs advertising BUSHNELL Truth Cams, which will undoubtedly be upsetting to Primos, the force behind the Primos Truth Cams. I'm looking forward to someday comparing the different versions, but I didn't buy anything today. On a positive note, I noticed an Igloo MaxCold 70 Qt. cooler which I think I've either never noticed before or which has been redesigned so it just looks different from what I remember. The MaxCold coolers are great gear, and 70 qts is a handy size for the deer hunter. Fifty-five bucks. 16.) Triton Rich - 12/11/2014
The Primos truthcam ultra series is made by Bushnell. This was undoubtedly upsetting to those people (like my brother) who have had nothing but trouble with the Bushnell cams and switched to Primos. Of course, I find this out right after I buy a Truthcam ultra. It takes nice daytime pics but 94.3% of the night shots are blurry. Most of them, so blurry that you can't count points on a buck. It's going back right after season.
17.) Swamp Fox - 12/11/2014
LOL!
Wow...Learn something new every day! I take back my snarky comment. At least that one I do. If Primos puts out a Blackout camera that ever gets good reviews, I'm interested, but otherwise I've resisted. Anybody using a blackout camera they think is good? 18.) Swamp Fox - 12/11/2014
Speaking of Christmas shopping...
I was in the hardware store the other day, or what passes for a hardware store in modern times, and noticed a semi-attractive woman of a certain age browsing something at the end of one of the aisles where they put the specials and the seasonal items and that kind of thing. I didn't notice what it was exactly that she was looking at because I was on a mission, headed to the ridiculously tiny specialty fasteners section in hopes of finding replacement parts for a climbing stand. But I overheard her ask the owner, "Is this appropriate for a five year-old?" and the owner replied, "Well, I've used one a lot" :-) which I thought was classic, but I kept moving deeper down the nuts and bolts aisle. I wish I hadn't, because I missed exactly what the woman said in return, but it was equally classic, especially at Christmas in a small town. As best I heard, it was "Well, that's not very helpful. I need some useful information." I literally hunched my shoulders in an effort to protect my neck from flying shrapnel when she threw that grenade, and when I recovered and peeked over the lip of the trench, the owner had disappeared and the woman was heading for the exit. I wanted to run after her and yell, "You're not from around here, are you?!" but she was too fast for me and made it out the door. I did notice she got into a champagne-colored Lexus SUV and drove off in the direction of a notorious gated community not far away. Now, far be it for me to suggest that people who drive Japanese luxury cars tend to be...um...hmmm...ahh... let's just say "full of themselves", but I will say there weren't a lot of them around here 30 years ago and I can't say they've been an improvement. I believe the woman's head might explode if someone showed her a puzzle marked "3-8 years" and told her, "...But I'll bet your special child can finish it in one or two." 19.) bluecat - 12/11/2014

Quick Gear Review
Harness for Small, Medium, Large and Extra-Large Binoculars, plus Rangefinder Pouch, Lanyards and GPS Pouch A while back I posted about looking for a bino harness for a pair of "compact" binocs I got myself for Christmas this year back around September. :wink They're not true compacts---8x32's--- but they're smaller and lighter than my 8x and 10x 40/42's, which is what I was "needing"/lusting for over the last few years, and as HD's introduced in 2012 or so, they're a significant step up in clarity and light gathering from the old-school binocs I HAD been using as compacts (objective lenses in the neighborhood of 21-23 mm.) All this to say that the "Small" FHF bino harness fits my new binocs PERFECTLY. FHF (Fish Hunt Fight) was the harness I chose after looking around, and I'd choose it again for bigger binocs if I didn't already have that covered. The FHF is not a completely closed system like my Badlands Bino Harness, which is designed for full-sized binoculars, but it provides great protection even so. It is available in small, medium, large and extra-large sizes. The FHF is light and wears comfortably. If it were me, I'd put heavier and/or less-slippy straps on it, but that's just because after using the Badlands design for several years, I'm a little spoiled by a harness that NEVER slips. If you're a Badlands virgin, you'll never know that the very occasional sag you get on the FHF harness after moving around in it for a while or putting it on over heavier clothes than your last outing doesn't occur with every strap system. Important to me in close quarters, the FHF is a little stealthier than the Badlands because you can tuck the flap away in the open position instead of having to open and close the Badlands "vault" every time you want to take a peek. In addition, the FHF "system" is designed to put a rangefinder pouch just to the side of your bino pouch. I found this cut down a lot on the movement and silhouette required to get at my rangefinder where I wear it when I use the Badlands. Could you rig a rangefinder pouch to your Badlands bino harness so it doesn't slide around, the way FHF has designed its system to work? Sure, and I'm going to try it when I get a chance, but it takes knowing the pretty clever secret and gathering some materials. I am using the FHF rangefinder pouch with the FHF harness, and really like the way the two work together. I am also using the short FHF lanyard with this rig, and the long one has replaced the Badlands bino harness' tether, which I was never in love with and had to jerry-rig from the get-go. I highly recommend investing in one or both of these tethers, depending on your needs. Last but not least, I bought the FHF GPS pouch even though I almost never carry a GPS when actually hunting. I figured I'd find a use for it, and I did. You know The Can? Well, I could never find a good place for my can while hunting. Some of my hunting pants won't accommodate my can. I never liked stuffing my can where I couldn't get to it easily whenever I wanted. Problems solved. The GPS pouch, which like the rangefinder pouch can be worn on your bino harness, is perfect for my can. It keeps my can where I can reach it easily, and it fits my can like a glove. I've even gotten some compliments on what I've done with my can when I wear the FHF pouch. People notice my can now when they never used to. I can't tell you much about my can here on the internet, but it's not a huge can. I don't like big cans, so I'd say my can is either medium or small. I like it in the pouch. :wink http://fhfgear.com/hunting/ 23.) bluecat - 12/12/2014
Isn't anybody going to follow up all that "can" talk. It's too easy.

They're probably skeered. Or on ArcheryTalk...
25.) bluecat - 12/12/2014
I like can can girls.
26.) bluecat - 12/12/2014
I have a small Primos can that I keep in a tupperware that is slightly bigger. It keeps it from gathering debris which my pack seems to collect. It also keeps it quiet when moving. Mine predates the little lanyard loop so it can be awkward to use and need a place to store quickly. I just put it in my shirt pocket or fatigue front pocket.
I've never gotten a deer to respond to one yet but I'm holding out hope. :-) 27.) bluecat - 12/12/2014
I like small cans and I cannot lie.
28.) Swamp Fox - 12/12/2014
Me too. And I didn't even know some cans came with a lanyard. That would help me hold on better. I guess I'm used to the older cans, but I'd like to get my hands on a new one.
29.) bluecat - 12/12/2014
Once you get one you like you tend to stick with it.
30.) Swamp Fox - 12/12/2014
I've gone through several. I crushed one that was brand new, but I usually wear them out over time. I mean physically, although one quit on me for no good reason. I never did figure out what happened with that one.

The list can go on for days.
day pack. i've already got a huge pack for long hauls, and a smaller one for quickies, but I need something for just an all day hike. Badlands 2200? Or the superday? I want a new spotting scope, possibly the Vortex Viper HD. Their warranty is just to good to pass up. the only complaint I have with the Vortex's is the eye relief, which seems (to me) to be a problem with all of their products. Binos, scopes, spooters etc. Atleast compared to other brands in their price ranges. With the spotter a nice tripod would be needed, as well as the Tines Up scope cam adapter. Ever seen it? They're pretty slick. tcams. I've owned a few in the past, but currently don't have any. I LOVED my moultries, but i've heard only good things about the new cabelas camera. Any thoughts? New bow? (more of a dream) the Diamond carbon cure is catching my eye, but i've never actually held her. I really want to get a 870 20 gauge, but those SXP's are looking good, too. Maybe i'd get an SXP in 12 though.. Ugh the decisions to make. You ever hear anything about the Under Armour boots, swampy? Good things? The 2200 is a pretty big pack for just hiking. I love mine, but I carry something smaller when I'm not on safari. I chose the Hybrid (discontinued) over the SuperDay for some reason which probably had to do with build and compartment arrangement. I would recommend the Hybrid for a day-hike pack if you can find one used on ebay. Badlands warranty is bombproof and follows the pack for life, not the owner. I would advise staying away from the newer super-light Badlands pack series, BTW. The material they use has a reputation for being very noisy in cold weather, which you will experience far more than I. It's hard to get detailed info on the individual packs on the Badlands site anymore, so I can't give you more thoughts on the current Superday. All I can say is that 4-6 years ago I was more interested in the Hybrid and the Diablo, and pulled the trigger on the Hybrid. Two zipper pulls so you decide where they meet up. It slings well because of the placement of the sling rings on either side of the zipper, and you almost forget it's on your shoulder, especially when carried muzzle-down. I did have to dowse it with my homemade scent killer and leave it out in the sun for a few days to knock back the neoprene smell before I could take it in the woods, but other than that, highly recommended. 57.) The reason i'm looking at Badlands is because of their warranty, to be honest. I know that Hornhunter has a similar warranty, but I already own a pack by them and I want to see what else is out there. Not that I have ANY complaints with the pack thus far. have you ever tried on the Badlands Sacrifice? I LOVE the way it fits, and i'm looking for something that fits similar. I heard the Superday is close to it, but i've never tried it. I really just need to go and try them all on. I don't like the way blacks creeks fit, and i've never tried more than the X2 from eberlestock. Like I said, I really just need to go and try them all on. For the UA boots I was looking more towards the Browtine or the Wall Hanger boots. I already own a pair of Meindls low hiking shoes which I LOVE, and they're my go to boots when it's not snowy. they're my favorite hunting boots (or shoes) I've ever owned. I also own 2 pairs of Danners and 2 pairs of cabelas stuff. I was just looking for a higher top boot that I can wear out in the summer, and see how they compare to the Meindls. I was going to link you to my Meindls, but I can't find them on the cabelas sight, which leads me to believe that they've been discontinued, and that really blows. I don't NEED new boots, but I could always use another pair.. 58.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2014
My Meindls (for Cabelas) are probably the most comfortable hunting boots I've ever owned. See if Lowa has something you like in a summer boot. They have a desert boot without goretex which is top notch. Also a goretex version if you prefer, I believe. I have had two pair of Zephyrs, which are low-tops, and they make a high-top which I'll bet is killer based on that experience. Don't remember the model name. My Zephyrs are up there with the Meindls for comfort. Awesome trail boots.

Haven't tried the Sacrifice, but if I were in the market for a new pack, that would be pretty high on my list.

I have quite a bit of under armor and think it has been worth the money, I also have a late season jacket and boot covers made by arctic shield that I got on sale and was no doubt worth the price.
I also have rocky boots that I cant beat dollar for dollar but am going to get a pair of Danner's by the end of the year. Now as for the Badlands pack I have a supper day pack that I really like but wish it did have more sub compartments in the main compartments, but I have put it through hell and back running the hills in Pa and hauling some heavy loads up and down the hills and it keeps kicking... Now onto the trail cameras, I have not used many but I have been using the moutrie M880 with great results and the battery life is outstanding.. 61.) Wild Bob - 12/22/2014
Quote: "full of themselves", but I will say there weren't a lot of them around here 30 years ago and I can't say they've been an improvement. - Swampy.
I hate to admit it, but I think your observation would ring true in many, many once rural areas around the country. 62.) Swamp Fox - 12/22/2014
Well, it's good to know I'm not completely delusional...LOL
BOSE QC 25 Noise Cancelling Headphones: Awesome!...They reduce the road noise of the Bronco to a dull roar...:-)...I think I'll have the drive shaft checked anyway, though...The noise increases exponentially at 65 MPH :wink Primos Trigger Sticks: So far, so good. I played with the tripod and the monopod last week. I believe you're gonna like them, especially if you've used other sticks. Primos Trigger Stick Treestand Attachment: Thumbs up. Haven't shot anything off it yet, but I like it. Adds some weight to your kit, but can be attached to your stand if you want to leave it in the woods. For some reason, Primos fails to mention this or give you any clue how to do it. Don't believe the claims it's much easier to remove than what you're used to. Still, I like it. Look for it on sale. It's priced higher than it should be. Okay, that's it for last-minute Christmas ideas. Y'all are on your own after this...:wink 63.) bluecat - 12/22/2014
Does this mean I need to take back my Jonas brothers CD?
I want this:
http://vikingsl.com/kwik-hoist/
I ordered this and it came immediately so I took it out hoping to be able to review it with a deer but it wasn't meant to be. I am impressed by this hoist and will take it with me next season and will do a review if I ever down something. Well built and solid. No excuses for not being able to hang a deer with this thing. 67.) Wild Bob - 12/29/2014
Nice, looks like a back saver! :tu:
68.) Swamp Fox - 06/05/2017
I think you'll be hearing more about this in the future as the price comes down.
But you know what the difference between this and deer nuts is? Deer nuts have always been under a buck. The lowest I've seen this is $579. Most common price is up around $700. 69.) bluecat - 06/05/2017
Does it work on does and jakes?
70.) Swamp Fox - 06/05/2017
It works better than on toms, 'cause they're just so much fluff...
LOL 71.) bluecat - 06/05/2017
One thing he didn't mention is if it is usable during day.

Sorry, I know you are used to scoring in the triple digits.
74.) Swamp Fox - 06/05/2017
Yes, it's usable during the day, which is one thing that makes it somewhat/arguably more useful than night vision, which is another thing I think has some pretty cool outdoor applications.
I've only used night vision (monoculars) briefly 12 or 13 years ago. Good quality, but not state of the art. I'd love to see how they've changed since. I'd like to find some good night vision goggles instead of binoculars and monoculars, which seem to be more popular in the hunting market. 75.) DParker - 06/05/2017

Sure, so long as it's daytime in Australia. 76.) Swamp Fox - 06/06/2017
