So here we go, I have hunted pretty hard this year and this is the last week of early archery season and my week of to hunt:grin:, the day started slow and the morning was ruined by some logging on the bordering property a few hundred yards from my morning stand, so pulled out at about 9:30 and went home for a few minutes and headed back in to my evening stand for the rest of the day, I had no action all day and at about 5:00 I decided to start getting my pack together, well, no sooner I do that I look up and here he is coming down the hill to the saddle I was set up in, so now I am doing some crazy hip movement trying to keep my pack on the stand seat and grab my Bow, so he comes in and checks a scrape I made on my way to my stand and turns broadside at 20 yards to head down through the saddle so I drew and let the arrow fly, I see the lit knock head towards it's mark and connect, the arrow does not make a pass through and I watch him take off and the arrow break off and fall out.

So I get my stuff together and head down to check the point of impact and check for blood, I find a week blood trail and decide with the light fading fast to start tracking him, I keep finding week blood for about 80 yards and then I star finding pools of blood and my mind starts easing knowing he cant be far with the amount of blood he was loosing, but that's where I screw up and instead of slowing down and giving him a few more minutes I keep moving on the trail and I finally spot him lying just over the peak of a 80' ravine, and yep you guessed it I bumped him and down he went almost to the bottom of a steep nasty mountain laurel infested hill side so I wait a couple minutes and slip slid fall and bust my azz down this steep nasty hill side for about 20 minutes until I finally caught a reflection of his eye from my head lamp.
so here is where the fun begins and I try with all I have to recover him on my own until I relies I need back up and that's when the call goes out and I say Hon, I got one, but, I have a problem and explain to her what happened and she grabs our youngest daughter and they come to bail my azz out, so I shot this Buck at about 5:05 pm and we got out of the woods and loaded up at 8:45 pm, we where all tired hot and sweaty but thrilled with the harvest.

sorry for the long winded story, but it was a long winded recovery and he is my best buck to date, not bad for a Pa public land buck and just more proof that antler restrictions are working, as in this area 10 years ago a buck like this guy on public land was almost unheard of, at least in this area..

Nice! Great story!

Have you considered putting a couple of pulleys and some rope in your pack for getting deer out of ditches and ravines? You can even do it with paracord to cut down on bulk if that is vital to you. When I hunted in the mountains more than I do now, this came in handy several times. There was even one place that I HAD to use it because the only way out was over a steep knob/point.

Thanks guys, he is my personal best and without a doubt one I will never forget, but then again I can actually remember every deer I have killed.

Swamp Fox, I actually thought about that after the fact and I think I am going to do just that, plus I never thought of using paracord, that was also a new stand I put up after the season began I didn't know that drop off was there, I knew there was some kind of drop off back there I just didn't know it was that big and steep:bang::bang:.
