If you came on here more often Dan, you'd find out this has been going on for years. I tried to put an end to it awhile back when Alex had the ban gun out. But does anyone ever listen to me?

In my opinion, as an old timer here from the very beginning, keeping the wheels on is not the point nor is it a productive strategy for boosting membership. Returning to a former glory is a pipe dream. Reinventing the old so as to appear new again is a common strategy but it requires patience and a welcoming spirit.

People return to websites where there is valuable content, where they learn, where they experience, where they can contribute. If we would all think first/post later before we blast and critique newcomers into the ground this would be a good start. That way of discourse is the ArcheryTalk Syndrome which never had a place here. Ongoing nit picking, know-it-all postures, the same people jumping every single thread and a nearly 100% chance every thread will be hijacked provide disincentives for anyone to contribute or to ask a question.
28.) Swamp Fox - 10/15/2014
It would be interesting to know how many "new" members we really have. Somebody correct me if there is a member list available for viewing, though.

We always seem to have a good number of lurkers (compared to overall membership). They're interested in something on here, assuming they're not spambots.

Not sure what you can do about a small number of posters "jumping" every thread when...wait for it...you have a small number of posters...LOL

With a few egregious exceptions, I think we do alright with the hijacking, considering that the topic always gets addressed and the question always gets answered---by the small number who post. Beyond that, the guys who are on here enjoy talking to one another, so they're gonna do that. Sometimes it keeps a thread alive until a new on-target contribution comes along or a new angle opens up.
29.) Bob Peck - 10/15/2014
SF our points of view are so diametrically opposed that I am choosing to remain silent after this post.

We don't do alright with the hijacking, questions don't get addressed, viewpoints get lost in the hijacked clatter and clamor, unpopular perspectives are slammed soundly to the mat, the oligarchy firmly in control has a penchant for arguing things to death and wait for it ... the reason there are so many lurkers who don't transition to members is BC is viewed as a private party.

Perhaps the patience we exercise in a treestand should be applied to the restraint required in just letting a thread sit there without comment.

Thanks, Bluecat, for your input.

I would be interested to know if many others feel that questions don't get answered or viewpoints get lost because of hijacking, because I don't see it. I'm giving room for some "egregious exceptions", as I noted, but I'm blanking on examples that illustrate your (Bob's) complaint beyond that.

Other points you're making may be valid, or they may be a matter of degree, or they may be a matter of perception. That's up to everyone to decide on their own. I will say that some major problems of the past don't seem to me to be problems of the present---I don't think we have a people-bashing problem anymore, for instance-- and so it comes down to the chicken and the egg. Are we where we are because of the past or because of the present? We have a small forum because of the past, perhaps. That's dust in the wind. Today, is a small forum behaving like a small forum an impediment to its own health?

As far as lurkers and a "private party" go, I say it's a hard call to make, since we (I) don't know who the lurkers are. Are they old members who have been turned off from posting and prefer just to read, or are they new guys who are hesitant to jump in the pool? The answer to that question would probably shed some important light on the discussion.

The idea that new members don't want to be active because of the old members is a little wobbly, though, when there's no evidence of new members wanting to be active. I'd accept more readily the idea that old members don't want to be active because of old members. My guess is our lurkers are old members choosing to stay silent. With the exception of trolls and the poor reception given Fairchase when he came on to promote his product, I can't think of a new member who's introduced himself and then been "slammed" or run off.

I can understand a new guy would be hesitant to walk into a party and be "the new guy." But as far as I can see, the door is open...

Rather than old members being a barrier to new members, I think it's more likely that someone comes sniffing around looking for a lot of hunting how-to and "That's when Joe shot the bear" stories and doesn't find them, and either drifts off or never joins. I wish people would post more outdoor content, too. But when you only have a few people posting anything at all in the first place, they're gonna get tapped out on that pretty quickly. Again, the chicken or the egg.

I assume you are talking about hijacking or bashing here again. If so, I would tend to agree. There's also always the Ignore button, if someone gets under one's skin. Otherwise, on a small forum-- if you are referring to the usual banter back and forth-- that would be a helluva way to run a railroad on the discussion board superhighway, LOL.
32.) billy b - 10/15/2014
IMO, this forum isn't any different from former the BowCountry , A.T, or Texas Bowhunter, For some reason we put up with the latest trouble maker waay too long, it affected a lot of us including me in a negative way. I put all my threads (what few there are) in Podunk corner because I don't mind at all an off topic post like some do, it always comes back to the original topic. The only new posters I have seem treated bad are the spammers, I also have been guilty of not throwing out the welcome wagon. If a hobby forum is going to grow, it has to be fun.

Against my better judgment I'm going to respond to your statement. I'm going to risk angering some folks on here but this is just total honesty from my humble perspective. This could be like my infamous Battle Mountain fiasco I suppose. But I truly like everyone on here. There isn't many of us anymore, but I honestly like everyone on here. I have no gripes and no enemies that I'm aware of. I will start off by admitting I've been a huge problem to the forum staying on topic in the past. The crimes that can be done against a forum, I've been guilty of all of them at one time or another. Hijacking, bashing, piling on, protecting friends, absurdity, pretending to hate Administrators, guilty on all of these as charged.

But over time, if you've been paying attention, I've come to see the forums differently than I used to. I had to come to the realization that many folks take the words on the screen way more personal or serious than I did. So I began to back off on the absurd, silly and stupid, and focus more on hunting topics. I luv talking and hearing about deer hunting. That's what brought me here in the first place, plus to learn a little about tuning and fletching and things that I never really gave much thought about. I learned more from the forum than I taught, that's for sure.

There was a time when you could come on here, do a search about 'string stretch' for example, and you could read over posts about that topic answered from a professional view point. You could browse through the forums and find discussions about the pros and cons of the different types of treestands or several other bowhunting topics.

You cannot do that today. The knowledge and discussion of those topics is gone. And the occasional hunting related threads that are started on here, quickly turn into something other than what was intended. You wanted an example so here goes. I started a post about scouting and clearing shooting lanes. I thought it was a good topic, a beginning of the season kind of thing that others might be interested in. It got hijacked by post #8 and stayed off the rails until post #21. Then it semi-stayed on track with the occasional hijack. Again, I've been as guilty on this as anyone in the past. But I've been trying to clean up my own act in that area. Nothing wrong with a good humorous post when someone sits the ball up on a tee for you. :-) Nothing wrong with humor, I luv humor, I will never stop enjoying life or the forums.

But that thread would be difficult to read to gain much knowledge. Not saying that it was meant to be deep or knowledgeable, but for someone interested in a topic they have to read through an awful lot to get to the stuff they're looking for. And that particular thread wasn't that bad compared to some I've seen on here. It happens all the time and I know part of the reason is there are like 5 guys on here now and they all intimately know each other. Only so much that can be said that hasn't already been said.

I've seen questions unanswered too, and so have you. You just posted one in the middle of some thread, not sure anymore which one they all seem the same, about how people disperse or use scents. Not sure anyone answered that one. That happens a lot too if you're looking to notice it.

Why the lurkers don't ever post, I don't know. There are probably dozens of different reasons for that. I do know that a ton of guys stayed away because of a hunter who everyone deemed a know-it-all, tough guy, in your face, poster. I understand where they are coming from in not liking him or just staying away. There were/are a bunch of times where I decide to stay away because something or someone rubs me the wrong way.

But I wonder how many times I probably came across that way to others. Man, I don't even know how many people I pissed off on ArcheryWorld, there were a bunch. Some deserved it (by my reasoning abilities) some didn't. I contemplate, learn, move on. But with people being people, things will happen. Enemies happen, friends happen, sometimes without even trying. Who knows what keeps this place from being as big as it was. I'm not sure I even care to know all the whys.

Bottom line is hijacking of hunting or archery topics happens all the time here if you're looking with eyes wide open. It ain't that hard to see. And by Bob's post, I know that it makes it difficult for at least one guy to feel like reading or contributing to the topics.

Since Bob is a semi-normal guy (:wink) I assume he represents some portion of the lurking community as well. There most certainly are others that feel the same way. I do too to a point. I find it hard to read someone's story or problem when it turns into something else. I usually give up on page 3 and move on. It doesn't infuriate me or make me want to leave the forum, because I'm used to it. Hell, sometimes I'm part of the problem. But I can at least see things as they are, I think, I hope.

If any of the lurkers are like me, they find it easier to just stay out of it most of the time. I typically glance over the daily topics, see if anything appeals to me, and normally not much does. I assume most guys are like that, and after awhile some probably just quit checking. There are many things that are inside jokes that any new person wouldn't understand and that too probably keeps some possible new folks at arm's length. Again, I am part of that also, can't help but be after all these years on here.

So, I can see both sides of this I think, from the inside and the outside. But to say that everything is fine the way it is, is narrow thinking, in my opinion.

Rip me a new one if you want but that's how it looks from here.
Rip me a new one if you want but that's how it looks from here.
Thanks for your thoughts and for taking the time to respond to my question. Your scouting/prep post that you cite is a good example of a thread that wobbles between hijack banter and staying on topic, but which both addresses and answers the question asked. I can see your point about someone not involved in the thread (just reading for noledge) having a problem with it, but can't say I agree he'd have a major problem. Perhaps, as I said, a matter of degree and/or perception.

Also, you reference my scent dispersal question. I buried that in the hunting topic of the day thread, or maybe somewhere else. I think if I had posted it in a thread of its own it would have gotten a sufficient response, by today's HC standard.

But again, point taken. That's why I asked for examples.

I don't mind if someone sets me straight if I go too far with a hijack. So feel free. :wink I do kinda mind if I'm sitting around the campfire with my buddies and someone says something and suddenly everyone else gets up to leave. You could at least say something about how the guy can't shoot anyway, or about his mom. :p
