1.) Swamp Fox - 10/02/2014
What are you all using this year: attractants, cover scents, scent control?

I'm thinking I might try to find the earth-scent Thermacell pads since the plain ones don't seem to last as long lately. A pad that I could think of as a cover scent might make me use fresher ones instead of trying to drain the last bit of blue from a plain pad that doesn't seem to be cutting it on Day 2 (never had that problem before, but I've noticed it lately).
2.) Wild Bob - 10/02/2014
Personally, I'm a big fan of Burnt Corn.
3.) Floyd - 10/02/2014
Wild Bob is a wise man.

(He's not going to give up any of his hunting secrets to you Swampy.)
4.) Swamp Fox - 10/02/2014
Wild Bob probably grinds up his own forehead gland juice at home...from his own forehead...
5.) Floyd - 10/02/2014
6.) Triton Rich - 10/03/2014
I'll be using evercalm again. Mostly positive albiet weird results so far. I also plan on putting out a mock scrape with an active scrape dripper to see if I can get the boys visiting regularly. Several times a year I lay down a scent trail during the rut with some sort of estrous doe urine, I have yet to see a buck near one of those scent trails! I'll probably still do it just in case one walks by sometime.
7.) Swamp Fox - 10/03/2014
I have also had some interesting results with Evercalm. Not sure I've figured out how to use it perfectly.

Let us know how you do with the scent drippers. I'll get some night pictures on them, but I can't say they've helped me during the day compared to the work they involve. Every once in a while you hit one right, though, and can pull a buck a few yards. I set mine out very early to get deer used to visiting, in the years that I set them out at all.
8.) Deerminator - 10/03/2014
sent shield is all i use
9.) Swamp Fox - 10/03/2014
I want to hear if Luv2 is making progress with his forehead gland and scent dripper projects this season.
10.) Wild Bob - 10/03/2014
I heard he was experimenting with used female underwear hanging in a circular pattern 30 yards around his stand... :-)
11.) Swamp Fox - 10/03/2014
LOL....
12.) Floyd - 10/03/2014
I have also had some interesting results with Evercalm. Not sure I've figured out how to use it perfectly.
Perfectly?

So, you found out the hard way not to use it like your stick deodorant, huh?
13.) Swamp Fox - 10/03/2014
LOL..

No, but close. I've decided it's not optimal to rub it on the tree you're in over your head as you set up. I think some "official" set-up tips --possibly from "experts"--recommend this idea. From what I've seen, it works better at ground level. If you apply it (only) in the tree, the deer come in looking for the deer that should be bedded, and when they don't see them (or smell them at ground level) they get hinky.
14.) Floyd - 10/03/2014
You're goofy, you shoot the deer before it realizes there is no deer. Don't want to shoot it? Who cares if the get hinky...wait how much you using to get them and there super nose hinky. Goofy. I think you just naturally make deer hinky. You're oozing with it - the deer hinky stuff.

SF, never had deer act other than normal.
15.) bluecat - 10/03/2014
Doing the old smoke routine. Smoke my clothes and myself. I do carry a small spray bottle of vanilla/water that I spritz on a leaf at a strategic area I want them to stop. I spritz myself too.
16.) Swamp Fox - 10/03/2014
You're goofy, you shoot the deer before it realizes there is no deer.
That would work if they are close enough, or in the open.
Don't want to shoot it? Who cares if the get hinky...
That's a nice theory. I like being cavalier, too. Actually, Cavalier is my middle name. But just as in turkey hunting, if a deer comes in one too many times to an area where it doesn't find what it expects to find, good luck luring that animal in again.
...wait how much you using to get them and there super nose hinky.
It's like your Brill Cream: A little dab will do ya.
Goofy. I think you just naturally make deer hinky. You're oozing with it - the deer hinky stuff.

Sombody's oozing with something...That's all I know.... :wink

Vanilla works!

I often do the smoke routine when I am camping and can't be sure my scent control is the best. I got one of those bee smokers and have a lot of confidence in this technique...Don't ask me why I don't use it as part of my "normal" routine...:cf:
18.) bluecat - 10/03/2014
I got a bee smoker as well. That smoke lasts and lasts. It actually very pleasant to smell while your hunting too.

Story Alert:

Years ago, I sprayed myself down with vanilla/water while standing at the base of a cedar tree before ascending. At sundown a doe and fawn came by. The fawn made a beeline to my tree and stood under my tree and licked my steps for 15 minutes. I must have gotten some vanilla on them. I could see her little face through the grates of my stand. I didn't have the heart to kill mama who stood 10 yards away waiting for baby to tire.
19.) Floyd - 10/03/2014
Is there anything you don't complain about Swampy? (Rhetorical)
20.) NEBigAl - 10/04/2014
I use scent away spray and play the wind. Its all Ive ever needed to avoid killing deer so I would like to keep that going
21.) crookedeye - 10/05/2014
I bought a bottle of deer dander..that stuff works good...that and secretions of a deer forehead gland..
22.) crookedeye - 10/05/2014
I always had good luck with one of those drippers ..at night..I've been using one for 10 years now and never had a deer come into one during shooting hours..lots of tracks in the mock scrape during the night.. I figure they no its there and not to afraid.. just to let them no deer are in the area..
23.) crookedeye - 10/05/2014
I bought a bottle of deer dander..that stuff works good...that and secretions of a deer forehead gland..
I probably would get better results rubbing a paper towel on Floyds head..floyds head has to have a lot of secreations on it...
24.) crookedeye - 10/05/2014
the secreations off of floyds head...would be unlimited..
25.) crookedeye - 10/05/2014
lol...
I want to hear if Luv2 is making progress with his forehead gland and scent dripper projects this season.
Just bought a third dripper today. I am just about to launch the study. What are the odds all my crap doesn't get stolen on PA public land? Someone start a pool on that, opening odds are about 3:1 it will disappear.

Scouting yesterday, and the amount of early rubs was impressive. Not sure why, but there are more than normal this time of year. Already second guessing all of my stand placement and I haven't even sat in one yet.:re:
27.) Hunter - 10/06/2014
Don't overthink things!
28.) luv2bowhunt - 10/06/2014
Easy for you to say, you've got monster buck coming to you. I have to find the needle in the haystack.:-)

I need more cameras, more stands, more time, less work.
29.) Swamp Fox - 10/06/2014
I've lost drippers way off the beaten track on public land and in not-too-obvious places on private...I always wondered if deer didn't pull them down and walk away with them, LOL.

Breathe brother. It's the journey not the destination.
31.) luv2bowhunt - 10/07/2014
I know. But it's kind of like what they say about sports. "It's not if you win or lose but how you play the game."

Everyone knows that is total BS. Winning is the only way to have true fun in sports. If you have fun losing, you should not be on the field. :tu: I am trying to end up in the winners circle, because I know that is a lot more fun than just hunting and missing.:wink

...plus I have to kill something or billy will be all over my buttocks..............again.

You know I think you might be on to something. I am so sure the last one that disappeared would not have been found by a hunter. You get a feel for where a bowhunter is going to go or not go. I have NEVER seen someone in most of the places I go, scouting or hunting. And yet the dripper just disappeared. No human tracks, no trucks parked nearby, no hikers on a pleasure trip through the nasty underbrush of the clearcut I can assure you.

This year I will have a camera on the dripper, so unless that disappears too, we shall see what happened. Right now I've got over $1,000.00 worth of gear on this 200 acre stretch of State Forest Land. If an ambitious meth head wants to make an easy buck, here is his golden opportunity.

'ambitious meth head' - is that an oxymoron?

34.) crookedeye - 10/12/2014
I went to bass pro the other day and bought some "donkey butter" from primos...now all I need to do is go out there and apply my knowledge what I learned from you guys over the years..if it wasn't for you guys I don't think I would be the deer hunter I am today...
35.) crookedeye - 10/12/2014
thank you...
36.) crookedeye - 10/12/2014
if it wasn't for you guys, I don't think I could have deer hunted..ive learned so much from you all...
37.) crookedeye - 10/12/2014
I mean there's not a better group of hunters out there then you guys...remember that time Floyd got all mad because he had a phoney pic on a magazine???lol I mean that's whats its all about isn't it...are that time a guy came on here wanting to better us as bowhunters and as individuals with a simple product .and we all question his manhood and made fun of the way he talked..you guys are the greatest...
38.) Swamp Fox - 10/12/2014
LOL...

And "donkey butter"....

Where's the emoticon where the little round guy's rolling on the floor holding his stomach laughing and kicking his legs in the air?

:p
39.) crookedeye - 10/12/2014
I have deerdander and donkey butter plus a tube of evercalm I had for 3 years.....I used deerdander and ever calm with harmons interdigital gland and I actually had deer bedding all around me...nothing would distract them..i had to get out of my stand and spook them up.. it was 9 30 am..i probally could have waited til 12...but I needed some breakfast..
40.) Swamp Fox - 10/12/2014

41.) Swamp Fox - 10/12/2014
I don' t think I've tried the Harmon's Interdigital. I have used interdigital in the past....way back. It was one of Joe Kelly's (local legend, LOL) tricks in the late 80's. It stunk so bad that might have been the reason I got away from it. It DOES work, especially in the early season or anytime you think a deer might follow a scent trail.
42.) crookedeye - 10/12/2014
the cashier girl ask me as she was checking out my knight and hale bone grunt call, and donkey butter ..I was blushing at the time.... and she said why dont you just buy peanut butter??
43.) crookedeye - 10/12/2014
its getting to the point these days where its embrassing to buy deer hunting products...like that deer anal thing ..its seems like there's always a girl asking stupid questions...they look at the thing and ask what is this for??? I just say its a deer hunting thing...
