Well, I just got my much anticipated notice from MFWP...I'm number 4,067 on the call list for the Bison cow tag that I put in for. :re:

Considering that there is possibilities for 54 tags to be awarded (depending on multiple factors) the odds don’t look very good for me this year. I guess it may not be impossible...but not very likely.

Oh-well there's always next year to look forward to! :dig:

Don't despair, Wild Bob...There's a bison call list at a few bars in Wisconsin that I've been to, and it seems pretty easy to tag out from what I saw.

In answer to Floyd’s questions:

- Generally speaking, typical applicant numbers run anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 (averages over the last 10 years).

- Bison population in the hunt area: (Surprise, surprise, but its tough to reference an accurate number...best I can tell is approximately 4,500=/-)

- Harvest numbers range dramatically from year to year as it all depends on the severity of the winter weather (i.e. harsh winter drives the bison out of the higher country in Yellowstone) therefore for the more bison out of park = more to allot for hunting. The most killed by hunters over the last 8 years was 250 in 2012, but again it's very drastic, a couple of years before that there was only 1 taken.

A friend of mine works at MFWP and I asked him how the 'call list' works. All he could tell me was that if you are on the list, and you are relatively low, you better not ignore any telephone calls from an unknown number during the season you put in for. He said they don't leave messages, and they don't call back...they call you once, you pick up and find out the good news or they cross you off the list and call the next name below. He said they burn through the list pretty quickly.

It's not the most coveted tag, but close...but it's pretty big to me as I've always dreamt of hunting a bison. Generally speaking, I'd say that Shiras Moose is becoming the most coveted tag here (at least with residents), with Big Horn and Mountain Goat competing for second. Non-resident most coveted hands down has to be Big Horn Sheep.

I've been in the 6,000s on the list before and the lowest was in the low 600's...that time, if it had been a bad winter, there was a chance I could have been called. So, I guess you could say that out of 5 years of applying - once I stood a chance. :grin: (you gotta be an optimist!)

You can use either bow or rifle, but crossbows or muzzleloaders are not allowed.

That's kind of the way I'm looking at it; I would like to have a chance to do it once.

Funny you should ask that Floyd...ultimately, you could have one, if you could keep it fenced in! A rancher that I'm friends with had one a few years ago. His spread (which is huge) is right next to his brother's ranch. Long story short; he struggled to keep that thing on his place. His brother's cows would come in to heat, and that thing would plow through a 5 strand barb wire fence on 8x8 posts to get to those cows. They had two arguments over that animal - the third time my friend got a call that his bison was out, he pulled up and his brother was standing over the bison which he shot.

Any how, all that said, if you are bored some time; look up a little light reading about the [U]huge fight [/U]going on right now in Montana about free-roaming bison. The natives support it as well as the American Prairie Reserve (a monstrous organization, whose final objectives are not quiet clear). The free roaming bison issue is the biggest battle this area has probably ever seen...way bigger than the pros or cons of the Keystone XL pipeline which could be built right through this area.

Dude, I worked on a bison ranch in Alaska. They kept the bull in a pen made of railroad ties and big timber. You know, you can buy a steer or cow. Nothing says you have to buy a sex crazed maniacal bull. DUDE!
