The bad news? There is bound to be mayhem with the newly introduced APR (antler point restrictions)
Then of course you have your bag limit restrictions depending on which side of the Blue Ridge Mountains you hunt And last but not least, if you're like me, you could be hunting both the Eastern and Western sides in a day with different weapons Confused yet? This is why I carry a laminated homemade cheat sheet so I know what to shoot, when and with what weapon. 2.) luv2bowhunt - 08/26/2014
I thought the AR's in PA would be a disaster at first. Thought I'd find dead illegal spikes and 4 pts all over the place. It wasn't, I didn't.
It will be fine Bob. My take is the VA hunters are a notch more sporting than the PA hunters. Except for that schmuck taxidermist I emailed you about one time. 3.) Bob Peck - 08/26/2014

I'm referring to the hunter (bow or gun) counting the points on one side, determining from a distance those points are at least 1" and there are at least 4 of these points whilst simultaneously remembering if he had already shot one that met that criteria or not and *THEN* executing on a shot decision. And oh yeah, Augusta County (the largest of all VA counties) has two (count 'em) two game wardens to enforce. There is no mandatory check in. It's voluntary and over the phone. My guess is law abiding hunters will take some time to put it all together and all others will operate as they normally do. Brown=Down, Git 'er in the truck right quick, skin 'er, next. 4.) Swamp Fox - 08/26/2014
Personally, I'm surprised they allow you on both sides of the Blue Ridge, Bob...:wink

By the time my feeble old brain processed if it was "doe days" or not the doe sauntered off out of range. I checked my cheat sheet only to find out does are legal to take all throughout the early and late archery seasons. Being the smart guy I am. I learned from this mistake and now check my cheat sheet *BEFORE* I exit my dwelling on the way to some distant mountain waypoint. 8.) Swamp Fox - 08/27/2014

Brown=Down, Git 'er in the truck right quick, skin 'er, next.
We have the same requirement of points being at least 1" long. My area it's 3 points to an antler and I'd say it took 3 seasons for all of this to sink in to the average goober. We had a few bumps in the road but it has been a huge improvement to buck hunting. The gripes you hear coming from this state will be about deer population or lack thereof. And that is a separate issue altogether. Keep us informed of how this plays out and what hunter reaction is over time. I've seen the Blue Ridge Mtns. One side of that is plenty to deal with. 10.) Swamp Fox - 08/27/2014
I don't have any problems with a point restriction if that's what the biologists really want to do, though I suspect a width restriction would work better in a lot of places and the science guys and the law guys are just too chicken to go there.
You can have trouble identifying a legal buck whether you use points or width, though for the life of me I can't understand why the science and the law guys want to define a point down to one inch for management purposes. It's one thing to be able to walk up to a deer on the ground and save yourself a ticket when you discover a one-inch cheater buried in the ground on the down antler; it's another to give the impression that this piddly "point" is an important part of your grand design. As far as the bag limits/doe days go, those are easy compared to keeping track of the weapons if you might hunt certain multi-county areas in Va. Phone check works fine and saves the G&IF a fair amount of money. Same goes for the honor system. Non-compliance and outlawry are baked into the cake. When it comes right down to it with deer, the game department doesn't really care how, what or how many you kill during the season as long as there is the appearance of order and there are enough of the tasty critters left at the end so that people aren't calling the capital with their heads on fire. 11.) TX restrictions are width-based, and while that might be the more effective method from a management perspective (though I haven't read any research on it, if it even exists), I'd sure feel a lot more confident in a shoot/no shoot decision based on a point count. Even the newer somewhat-relaxed standard of "main beam spread wider than the raised ears, tip-to-tip" can be really difficult to judge reliably. 12.) Alex - 08/27/2014
On even days climbing treestands are allowed but on odd days climbing treestands are not allowed unless the said treestand uses a fixed ladder leading to the semipermanently affixed treestand.
With the exception of Sundays in which all climbing treestands are not allowed due to Sundays being an odd day. 13.) Swamp Fox - 08/27/2014
From what I gather, a point restriction is appropriate in some places and not in others, based on the research. The goal is to protect younger bucks. In some areas, you have young deer genetically and nutritionally capable of five and six points as 1.5 year-olds. So a six point or three-on-a-side rule isn't doing diddly for your quality deer management. Yet my guess is some game departments shrug and assume it is easier to count points than to estimate width, even though width seems to me almost always a BETTER indication of age in MORE locations.
I have an ongoing friendly argument with an old geezer who hasn't really hunted much in the last 20 years about how it's not impossible to miss spikes on a buck's head at 20 yards, much less a brow tine that never developed at 200. He thinks $400 binoculars and $800 scopes have eliminated the guesswork, LOL. It's all in the buck's angle and how much time you have to look him over whether points or width are more hunter-friendly, if you ask me. 14.) luv2bowhunt - 08/27/2014
The 1" thing gets easy over time. For rifle hunters they end up looking for this; Look for 3 on top, that simplifies the process.
"> Not this. Brow points get lost in the shuffle when rifle hunting. Too many times there is no time or not in the open enough. Not a problem when bowhunting obviously. "> 15.) Swamp Fox - 08/27/2014
Exactly. "Two up" (in the case of three-on-a-side rules).
Sometimes I see browtines when bowhunting, sometimes I don't. I suppose it all comes down to what you're looking for. A lot of times guys here are looking really, really hard for the browtines so they can make a poor little basket-rack legal, LOL... 16.) luv2bowhunt - 08/27/2014

I'm counting on Bob Peck to use his power and influence to open public land in Virginia to Sunday hunting. If he is successful, I'll invite him to try it down here, and then I won't return the phone call when he leaves a voicemail to say he's in the area. :wink
22.) luv2bowhunt - 08/27/2014
Not sure the Sunday hunting is going to happen in PA. Never seems to get much traction when it is proposed. Plus the PA Game Comm. always says they will have to shorten seasons if it is passed. Not a fan of that, don't want to miss out on the Nov. rut like we used to.:td:

Jon mentioned the possibility of shorter seasons in Delaware as well. Not an issue here; never heard it raised. It only comes up from crackpot anti-Sunday folks, it seems to me. I may or may not have heard the argument used in Virginia. I don't recall.
25.) Swamp Fox - 08/27/2014
The solution, of course, is to allow bowhunting on Sunday. If someone objects to that, you know he's a loon.
No chance of Sunday bowhunters decimating the deer herd. :wink 26.) Ventilator - 08/27/2014
Yeah that's the NC mentality still anyway. But it beats no hunting on Sunday at all.
More about loud noises here I think anyway. 27.) Bob Peck - 08/27/2014

There was no power or influence. I just sat on the sidelines whining and watching the political maneuvering of the 1% like I usually do.
As for down "there" where you call home? The further south I go, the harder it is for my old brain to process the accents. I'm currently listening to a Rosetta Stone CD in my car to help me with this problem. 28.) DParker - 08/27/2014

First time I went through NC was on my way to FLA and I was 19 yrs old. Headed for a week at Daytona Beach that I ended remembering maybe 4-5 hrs of.
Anyway, stopped at a gas station in NC and this soft spoken black guy says to me "u git fi wuunns fo a fi dolla beeellll?" I literally asked him to repeat it 3-4 times and he got pretty miffed at me. Finally I got it and gave him the five ones for a five dollar bill. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Swamp Fox but I could be wrong.:-) 30.) bluecat - 08/28/2014

I can understand southern accents better than those Boston and Maine accents; and I grew up in upstate NY! (But I've also lived in Tennesse for over 18 years...) I guess I'm just a redneck at heart. :-)... no matter where I'm living.
