Alright guys, what we lack in marksmanship, hunting skills, camoflauge, wits, deception, scouting ability and general wherewithal and omnipotence we can make up for in two things. Bullshit and outright lying.
Ive already got some good google image searches of "big bucks" that I am stenciling myself in with microsoft paint. Season starts Sept 1st here this year, I think we got it locked down.

The first couple of hunts of the year are always test runs, shake the cobwebs off...:wink That's what I say, anyway, LOL.
Forget your bowhook, drop something out of the stand, miscalculate when you have to set the alarm to get out the door on time, figure out some of your Bright Eyes disappeared in an ice storm after you've gone too far to relocate the last one...

Don't forget the whole idea of being up in a treestand for the first time in 8 or 9 months. Takes awhile to feel comfortable up there the first day or two. Who uses bright eyes to mark trails anymore?

Well, on your lease you might be fine following them. But if you hunted on the same public land I hunt on, you wouldn't want to trust your tacks.:wink
I've used my Garmin GPS in the woods for 8-10 yrs or so now. Never let me down once that I can remember. Only place I put tacks is right on the tree. But I expect anyone still driving a Ford Bronco is definitely going to be using tacks though.
That plus an overdraw and Trebark camo.

Serious question: By "wouldn't trust" do you mean that you wouldn't rely on it as your only means of finding your way (due to concerns about dead batteries, inability to locate satellite signal because of a thick tree canopy, etc), or do you mean that you doubt the reliability of the current state of the technology or even on a fundamental level?

One of my favorite pastimes is following other peoples' tacks on public land. :wink
Generally, you can't rely on the signal in several types of conditions I normally hunt. Even when you have the signal, following the directional arrow thingie or a backtrack log won't get you close enough to your chosen site, especially in the dark, to be worth the bother. You're better off relying on landmarks and terrain features (and/or tacks :co:)...or at least no worse off.
I use GPS for scouting/mapping, but I don't/wouldn't use it for close-quarters navigation when it comes time for the rubber to hit the road.

The public land unit I do most of my hog hunting on during rifle season is the only unit I know of that is open for nighttime raccoon hunting (in fact you can only hunt them at night there). I'm leery enough as it is of public land rifle hunting during broad daylight....I'll be [I]damned[/I] if I'd head into that one when it's truly dark out.

I called the game warden a few years ago to investigate a rifle hunter on bow-only state land, and when it became clear he wasn't willing to do anything unless I made the arrest myself, I asked him if he was interested in the location of several illegal permanent stands. Once I told him the general area and it was clear he'd have to get out of the vehicle and get his shiny shoes dirty, I could tell it was "No." They kinda funny. Now I'm funny too.
I'd have more to worry about from snakes and stump holes than from people here at night. I never have any company walking out the usual hour or two after sunset after a hunt, forget about four or six hours afterwards, whether it's in-season or out.
My suggestion is to leave the antler hat at home, and stay away from the pot patches. :wink
