I have a question for you guys.
I have to put in an egress window. There is an existing window that is like 48w x24h. I found a slider that qualifies as egress that is 48 x 48 which fits perfectly in the cinder block wall except the rough opening "48x48" is the concrete dimensions. I've only seen windows get installed on pressure treated wood... is it "ok" to install the window on concrete or do I have to make the window opening 3" wider and deeper to allow for a wood casing? Thank you Colton "BFH" 2.) Swamp Fox - 08/10/2014
This sounds like something Crookedeye would no about. He's had to use an egress window several times, and has lost a few pair of underwear and a shoe or two in the process...

Personally, I'd prefer to have a wood frame to set the window in (gives you some play if settling occurs...But I guess it depends on your long term plans for the home. Some other additional points to consider would be:
Is the foundation and substructure solid? Is the building built on migratory soils? Do you have any existing cracking or movement in the foundation and existing concrete walls? If yes, then I’d be very hesitant to put in any window or door frame directly in contact with the concrete opening as the likelihood of it binding up over time is very real. Lastly, what code is the jurisdiction operating on, is it IRC and what year (version)? I believe the IRC has some lintel/ledger requirements in concrete wall openings. 4.) bluecat - 08/12/2014
