Well, that's a Bozo no-no...

Hard to believe Muck doesn't know what HSUS is all about.

Perhaps a few pointed emails will set them straight. Similar to what was done when somebody else made the same mistake a few years ago. I don't remember who, but it was a big push to correct whoever it was. Might have been a dog food company.

The HSUS is not your local Humane Society which runs dog and cat shelters, boys and girls...

They are the largest and most well-funded anti-hunting group in the U.S. last time I checked...

They are quite happy to run ads and fundraise as if they run shelters, though.

They're getting reamed in the comments on that photo.

Yeah I saw that chit yesterday. Ive never owned a pair but ive been tempted a few times to buy. Glad I didn't.
7.) Swamp Fox - 08/05/2014
If anyone's looking for an alternative, I've used Bogs with good success.

I can't speak to their corporate charity involvement or their politics, but I've been wearing them for five or seven years when I need a warmer waterproof boot, and they have held up very well. Comfort has been more than acceptable.

I couldn't ever justify the money Muck wanted after I found Bogs.
8.) Swamp Fox - 08/05/2014
I did put a good extra insole in my Bogs, though, and that was an improvement.

I do that with just about any boot, but just an FYI.
You can't teach stupid! holy balls!
I don't know. I've encountered a lot of people whom I'm certain have earned a PhD in Stupid.

And, if the most recent post by the company is above board it looks like the pic and accompanying text in question were in error (and have since been removed):
We would like to respond to our loyal customers and provide additional information about recent posts on social media regarding a monetary donation to a local animal care organization. Our post inaccurately stated that a donation was made to The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Moreover, the post itself was inappropriate under the circumstances.

Family members of an employee who recently passed away requested that, in lieu of flowers, co-workers donate funds to the Humane Association of Northwestern Rhode Island, a local association founded in 1978 to solve community issues primarily related to stray cats. They are not affiliated with HSUS as the posts incorrectly stated.

The money is not a corporate donation, but a collection of personal contributions from employees with the intent of remembering a beloved co-worker. While our intentions were good, the use of corporate social channels under these circumstances was inappropriate.

Muck Boots has a heritage of respect for the outdoors and for nature. We apologize for the anger and confusion the posts have caused and have removed them from our social channels.
10.) Swamp Fox - 08/05/2014
I often--very often---have to wonder how these organizations (to include the government) decide who to give social media access to.

Obviously, the bar is not very high.

Don't even get me started on hashtag diplomacy...

I would hate to be the poor little peon who put up the original Muck post right now.
11.) bow-fishhunter - 08/05/2014
Nothing in their statement has anything to do with the post... they called it "our fundraiser" nothing to do with in memory of X... :dig:
Nothing in their statement has anything to do with the post... they called it "our fundraiser" nothing to do with in memory of X... :dig:
Hmmmmm....that's a good observation. I should have read some of the comments on that statement before posting about it here. I only have an Associates degree in Stupid. :-)

EDIT: A little further digging turned up this screen capture of yet another (now deleted) FB post in which it is explicitly stated that it was a fundraiser for HSUS held by what we must assume are Muck Boot employees (based on the use of #MuckTeam) involving the sale of Muck Boot products, not personal donations by employees to a non-HSUS affiliated organization.

Yes, that probably only cost the company a few 100k in sales....no biggie...that employee probably makes 30k per year. Fire him/her and break even in a few years maybe.

This just keeps getting better. Now, they've made a donation to the Rhode Island organization mentioned above, and as soon as the RI group got it, they made a post on Facebook saying that they share the same beliefs as the HSUS and don't condemn them at all!

So let me get this straight, and I'll leave the dead employee/dog/cat, whatever out of it because it's irrelevant I think..

- #MuckTeam is prepared to donate to HSUS and get called on it by a mob of thousands of angry sportsmen, farmers, and ranchers
- They go "Oh Shit, that was stupid of us", and come up with a story that the HSUS was incorrectly tagged and it was a RI shelter
- That guy doesn't know anything about it so he says he has no idea and hasn't received a donation for 2 grand
- Muck says, "Oh Shit, call that guy and let him know we ARE donating to him"
- He says "Thanks!" and then turns around and posts that he did receive the donation, and doesn't get what the fuss is about, and that they share the same beliefs as the HSUS and don't understand why all these hunters, whose agenda he opposes, are liking his shelter's FB page.

You can't make this shit up! Great Marketing case study about what not to do if you don't want to kill your brand!
18.) bow-fishhunter - 08/06/2014
The only thing they can do is fess up and try to be honest and then ask/beg for forgiveness. then donate a ton of money to pro hunting and ranching organizations...
19.) Ventilator - 08/06/2014
This turned into quite the story.

Its always fun reading Dan-O`s account of happenings. Only thing better is hearing him say them in person!!

This should get everyone pretty much double the amount of pissed off they were to start with. That should help sales. lol
20.) Swamp Fox - 08/06/2014
I'm a little surprised Muck hasn't returned to the fray by now. If anything, they have more negative comments now regarding their so-called explanation than they did before they tried to issue what I'm sure they are simple-minded enough to think was an apology. It was poorly done, even if there is any truth to it, and just stirred up the bees worse.

If this image will post, it's pretty funny. The bees have swarmed every Muck post all the way down the page, even the most innocently smarmy:

Okay, the screen grab of the thread text didn't work. Someone will have to teach me how to do that.

So, Muck posts that picture as the lead to a new thread that asks, "What are your outdoor plans in your Muck boots this weekend?"----And the first reply is .....

"To burn them!"

LOL and too-shay!
21.) Ventilator - 08/06/2014
that's fkn great!!
22.) Swamp Fox - 08/06/2014
I think for s&g's and to kick this up a notch, an occasional knee-slapper from some of the HSUS supporters that are trolling over there on the Muck Facebook page would be the ticket. We expect them to be lost at sea, but some are more than others:

This is one of my favorites:

"HSUS does not work against all hunting. It works against the most extreme forms of hunting such as canned hunts or hunting with lead bullets which are unnecessary and kill other wildlife."
23.) Swamp Fox - 08/06/2014
I'm looking for a post or a tweet I saw somewhere last night where some loony was explaining how "assault guns" fired extra deadly bullets "in gold cases." How did she know they were extra deadly? Because they were more pointy than other bullets. It was a fact. She could not be swayed...

If I find it, I'll see if I can get an image of it.

Hold the fort, gentlemen...I'm going back in...

37.) Swamp Fox - 08/07/2014
Well, it's still not clear to me whether Muck made the donation to a local shelter or if HSUS got some money, which is what some people are claiming.

Things sure move slowly at Muck and for whoever is handling their PR. It's been crickets from them as far as an official clarification goes, as far as I know.

I don't care if some employee rounded up some money and gave it to a local humane society. They're mixed bags as far as supporting hunting or "animal rights" and always have been. You have to know who you're dealing with locally.

If an employee rounded up personal money and gave it to HSUS, on the other hand, that is--as they say---problematic.

As an actual hunter (ostensibly, lol) and a hypothetical CEO of Muck Boots, here are a few things I'd think about:

If any corporate money went to HSUS (even matching funds, say), I would care very much. Personal money? You can't keep employees from donating to whomever they want. On the other hand, advertising personal donations that rub your customer base the wrong way is cause for a call to the principal's office, especially when you reference the corporate brand.

Would I have let an employee tweet about a personal event/adventure/topic or about a private donation to ANYONE using the corporate signature? Hell no. Very stupid. Sometimes harmless, potentially disastrous, always undisciplined.
38.) Hunter - 08/07/2014
Muck's latest response.............. They say they would never intentionally alienate their customer base. But, they still haven't said anything that would distance them from HSUS or HSUS beliefs......

A few days ago we made a series of mistakes here and on our other social media channels. Words can’t express how sorry we are that we’ve caused so much disappointment in our brand. There’s been a lot of speculation as to what happened, and clearly our initial statement caused even more confusion.

While we’ve been quiet here, please know that we’ve been reading every one of your comments and I want to personally address your concerns.

Here’s exactly what happened…we suffered the loss of a colleague a few months ago. Our colleague had a long fight with cancer and had a cat that was by his side until the very end. Because of that, his family requested that — in lieu of flowers — donations by employees, not the company, be made to a local animal shelter in his honor. The Humane Association of Northwestern Rhode Island (HANRI) was identified as our local shelter; it’s about ten miles from our office in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Here are the mistakes we made: first, we posted photos on our Facebook page and on Instagram of an employee-sponsored collection effort in our warehouse, which was disrespectful to our colleague and completely inappropriate. Despite our good intent, we should never have used these corporate channels for what was a private matter. Then, we incorrectly tagged Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in the posts, when the money was actually intended for our local animal shelter. And finally, when the statement went up in an attempt to clarify the events, the money hadn’t yet been delivered, because the funds were still being collected. Cash and personal checks were hand-delivered yesterday by the same employees who raised the funds.

Needless to say, our entire team has learned some hard lessons this week.

We know it is you, our customers, who have helped build the Muck Boot brand to what it is today. We would never intentionally alienate you, and we sincerely apologize if we have done so this past week. We’ve worked hard over the years to build quality footwear and to build a brand that is broadly trusted – we hope that you’ll give us a chance to earn back that trust.

Farmers, outdoor enthusiasts and sportsmen are among our most loyal customers and at the core of what we do and why we do it. You can continue to count on us for the very best footwear and to never forget who we work for – you, our customers.

— Sean O’Brien, director of footwear, Muck Boots.
39.) Swamp Fox - 08/07/2014
As long as HSUS didn't get any money, I'm fine with that explanation.

There's not a lot you can do if the local humane society turns out to be anti-hunting or animal rights-oriented after the fact. Hopefully, someone did some homework ahead of time, but if not, let that be another lesson learned. As I said above, your local humane society can be hit or miss as far as meshing with your views.

There are several very elaborate theories, including conspiracies, floating around out there about this. I'm interested to see how those play out in the wake of this reasonable and more complete explanation.

Distancing from HSUS would be the next step, but I wouldn't hold my breath. If a strong demand is made, I can see it, though I bet Muck lets sleeping dogs lie.
