Tomorrow is the day I'm finally going to get a new bow. After 10 years of the Bowtech Justice it's time for an upgrade. I will shoot everything I can get my hands on at the shop (even Hoyt), and walk out with the winner.
Just wondering what things you guys consider as most important when picking out a bow. For me it is a smooth draw cycle and solid back wall. Those are non-negotiable for me.

For me I look for a bow with some length to it. They are getting harder and harder to find. Bows are getting smaller and smaller. I want some length because I feel they are more stable, less nock pinch and most importantly they look really really cool. Because they are bigger they are heavier and thus less shock. My latest bow is 35" ATA.
Most bows today have the string stop. They really make a difference in shock. Not a big fan of the roller guard as that means you will have to deal with torque issues but it looks like they are here to stay.
Shoot 'em all objectively and pick the one you like. Good luck.

E35 is a nice bow....did I just say that?
The Mathews Chill X is a 35 incher that appears to have the right stuff. The Chill XDS is a 30" bow 6in brace 330 fps at 29" draw. impressive for an M bow.
My Strother SHO from last year is great, the Vital for this year has a fairly stiff draw cycle but pulls evenly to the back wall. Both are short bows.
Expedition archery is worth looking into as well as New Breed. New Breed supposedly has their chit together. I shot my friend Todd`s New Breed in Canada this year. Very nice shooter and longer ATA.

I'm not that wrapped up in a solid back wall. You can shoot well what you practice well with, and there's something to be said for at least learning on a bow with which you have to pay attention to your hold. I agree a solid back wall feels nice, but having come to that discovery from nearly two decades of bows without solid back walls, it's not a deal-maker.
If I feel buzz or jump at the shot, that's a big turn-off but not necessarily a deal killer. Too much of it is.
Speed is not much of a consideration to me.
I like 34 in. ATA, though I do have one bow that's considerably shorter than that which I like a lot. I would definitely start my search for a new bow in the 34-inch neighborhood. I would also look for a smooth, easy-to-start-and- let-down draw. While it used to be a highly-prized nicety for me, my shoulder now tells me it is a necessity.
So put me down for those draw characteristics as my must-have.

I forgot to add...The new Strother Moxie is very much improved on what was a great longer ATA bow to begin with. Very nice and accurate target bow that comes in camo.

How many different lines of bows do they carry? Just curious.
I am with you on a solid back wall. Been using the DXT for about 6 years now and I have had a couple of occasions where adrenaline has led to a little extra pull on the string resulting in a high shot.
Been thinking about a longer bow also. Found a Bowtech Sentinel laying around here and I think I may give it a try this year. Been shooting it a little and I think I will like it.
Of course, if Swampy or Kenny wanted to send me one of their Strother Wraths that they have sitting in the closet........... :wave:

I'd be all over that Switchback XT if I didn't have one already...Though that has the classic "Mathews" back wall, LOL.
That's my "short" bow that I referenced above. :-)
The Strother Wrath is a nice bow but since I already had an SX Rush, it didn't trip my trigger. Plus I like the draw cycle on the Rush better. If you can find one of those out there, it deserves a serious look.

I think it's seven, from a quick look at [url]www.strotherarchery.com[/url], plus one ladies' bow. A few of the seven have been out a few years and then there are their variations....Which I kinda like. I'm constantly complaining that companies seem to stop making stuff I like as soon as I find out I like it. :bang:

Psychologically speaking, it's harder to shoot an ugly bow. It's a saying I pick up from Crookedeye. He's hard on a bow. You know, from the bow's perspective. I think he was using a putter in golf analogy; an got mixed up.

My lede was Eva Shockey, though, since the KJ thing had just gotten on my radar and at the time was just at a low boil.

I'd go with the Diamond Infinity...It would be the last bow you'd [U]ever[/U] need to buy; you could crank it up for starters, then lower the draw weight and reduce the draw length the older you get, thereby working backwards... :-)

When I saw this I thought of a little writing project I was working on but scrapped, at least for the time being. Maybe it's even relevant to the thread, LOL...

Review of New Gear Reviews:
Against my better judgment, I recently picked up the Whitetail Journal Buyer's Guide
and the Bowhunter Gear Special... [BREAK]
So, here goes: I'll start with a review of the bow reviews/info, and then maybe move on to other categories.
We'll use the Snooze-Snore Score for Outdoor Writing (Multiphasic) to rate how worthwhile a review is to read for yourselves. A higher number translates to a better review, on a scale from Zero (Dirt Nap) to 10 (Who Needs Caffeine?).
I spent the eleven dollars so you don't have to.
First, the [I]Whitetail Journal[/I]: 112 pages with no compound reviews, one crossbow review; three compound blurbs, eight crossbow blurbs; four compound ads and four crossbow ads. Highlights of the crossbow review? Eight point three pounds, a picatinny rail and a stock that doesn't shatter when the bow is shot in cold weather. Woo-hoo!
[B] In the [I]Bowhunter[/I] piece on 2014 bows, the author says, "It's now common for bows to measure in the 28" to 32" range, weigh in under 4 lbs., and blow arrows through chronographs at speeds of 340 and even 350 fps."

He proceeds to "review" 24 bows, 14 of which meet the ATA range, 13 making weight, and 9 are up to speed.. Only two bows hit all three criteria. (Seven specs of various types which were not disclosed are assumed not to meet the benchmarks.) One bow was obviously a youth/ladies bow, and two others with wide draw-weight adjustment ranges could be. At least one significant bow company was not represented in the review at all, while five that I've never heard of were. The "reviews" are great if you want a recitation of specs and quotes from marketing managers, and don't want insight into feel, fit and finish or any interesting details.

I like to go with a target typ bow for hunting. kinda the best of bolth worlds.

Small shop that carried Bowtech, Hoyt, Mathews, and Force I think. Shot the Hoyt Faktor, Mathews Creed and Chill, Bowtech Carbon Overdrive and Experience.
The Bowtech Carbon Overdrive was eliminated on the first 2 shots. Too much hand shock and I absolutley hated the draw cycle of the destroyer cam.
Mathews did not impress. They would've had to to overcome the ugly factor of the gawd awful risers. I mean they were nice but didn't reach out and grab me, plus there was a bit of hand shock which surprised me. I shot the Chill about 15 times at least and it just didn't feel as good as the Faktor or Experience.
The Faktor was really nice. I liked everything about it and I spent a good bit of time shooting this against the Experience. Shot them side by side for several rounds and decided on the Experience. I liked the draw a tad better, luved the solid back wall, and the bow was dead in the hand after the shot.
Only extra I kept on the bow was the rest. They talked me into keeping the Fuse Ultra-Rest, which I normally would've had them take off. They assured me it is nearly indestructable, surviving the Yukon and Africa by their customers.
Ha, Yukon and Africa. I laugh at the ruggedness of those places compared to PA State Forests.:wink
.........no coffee and doughnuts. Had to wait on one goober who wanted new nocks on his arrows (couldn't handle this delicate procedure on his own) and another goober who had to ask what the difference was between field points and broadheads. But we all had to start somewhere I suppose.

Pinterest is the BEST thing that ever happened to my [I][/I][B]wifes[/B] cooking. Seriously, almost everything she tries off of there is a big hit. She made lemon cooler cookies 2 days ago and they are out of sight.
Checked the cameras once, I got one that looks like he's going to be a giant. Can't wait to check it in a couple weeks. Of course I'll never see him in reality, but it's nice to know they're out there.

Also, would be interested in hearing a description of how the Faktor (which one?) and the Experience drew and handled...There are very few Bowtechs that I've liked on the draw, and at least one Hoyt that shocked me with how nice it was (Hoyt 'Em or somebody else from Battle Mountain would have to remind me which model it was)...
And don't tell me that I'd have to Experience the Faktor for myself, or that my Experience would depend on a lot of subjective Faktors...

Describing how a bow draws is like reading a wine tasting.
The Faktor opened with a strong floral bouquet that hits the back of the pallette up front in the draw, while the Experience brought out the more subtle, oakey, earthy flavors in the valley. Each with a solid, but not overpowering backwall, the lends itself well with chicken, lamb or venison.
It was the Faktor 34 and I thought the draws were very similar, with the Hoyt not loading as quick as the Bowtech. Both were quiet, but the Experience seemed more dead in the hand.
I didn't chrono either one, but I'm sure the Bowtech seemed faster. ??? But who really no's all this stuff anyway?

I am 5' 9". The shorter axle to axle bows are much nicer for me. I've shot it twice, feels like a real winner to me. Can't see my arrows fly at all. But I'm half blind now too, so.............:wave:

Hunter has it correct that Camp Swampy really is a state of mind. Floyd's been to Camp Swampy in Virginia and in South Carolina, while I'd have trouble getting Luv2 to even consider visiting Camp Swampy even if it were just over the Pa. line. :wink
There are a couple of versions of Camp Swampy these days. One is open air, open fire and open to mosquitoes. The other has AC, screens, a stove and lots of pots and pans.
I'll try to post some pictures this year of Camp Swampy since that's been on my to-do list for a while anyway, but if you dig deep in the HC archives you might be able to find a few on your own.
It'll be like a treasure hunt! :-)

The bow is shooting awesome. Extremely quiet and dead in the hand after the shot. Still getting used to the draw and hold, but I am very pleased with it. Blowing arrows through my old Block target and even going through the GlenDel Buck in a few areas.
