My first thought was "Oh my God, how will this affect Obama's fundraising?" Thankfully it only detoured him by 38 seconds and he was able to get back on track and do the work of the American people.
"The president's speech went on as planned, complete with laugh lines, despite the deaths of nearly two dozen U.S. citizens in what appears to have been a deliberate missile attack." I was gonna post this yesterday, but I thought, "Naw, it's too depressing."
But the more I thought about it, the more I thought it was important to pass it around, whether any Americans were aboard or not. Reuters was reporting this shoot-down and the possibility of American deaths at 11:21 AM at the latest (yesterday). I wonder if President Obama gets big news very quickly, as G.W. did while he was reading to schoolchildren, or if he finds out about it through the media. The answer would say a lot in this case. So, here you go. Be sure to watch the video at the bottom of the article or here to see what a strong, engaged American president looks like. Let's see if President Obama can have a personality transplant by 11:30 AM today. Semi-retired president interrupts burger run to issue brief statement on plane being blown up As Julia Ioffe says, taking down a passenger jet from Amsterdam means that the Ukraine war now has implications for civilians throughout Europe, not just those in Donetsk, which means (at a minimum) much harsher sanctions on Russia and dangerously poor relations with Moscow for NATO going forward. And yet, when O did finally step to the podium more than an hour later, here’s the wisdom his staff had prepared for him to impart: “It looks like it may be a terrible tragedy.” http://hotair.com/archives/2014/07/17/video-semi-retired-president-interrupts-burger-run-to-issue-brief-statement-on-plane-being-blown-up/ 3.) bluecat - 07/18/2014
I sometimes don't know if I should be posting all this stuff. I hate politics. It's not enjoyable. But I'm so angry that if I didn't post this stuff, I would probably go home and kick something I shouldn't or smart off to my superiors.
You, DP and others help me through all these things. I realize I'm not alone. I'm able to function again with a positive attitude. Humor is so healing. 4.) Swamp Fox - 07/18/2014
Oh, by the way...shame on Hot Air for an inaccurate (though engaging) headline.
Obama actually DID NOT interrupt his burger run for this news. He waited for over an hour to address it. We sometimes give him too much credit. 5.) Swamp Fox - 07/18/2014

The important thing to remember in the wake of all this is you can still get a burger to be cooked your way (medium well) if you want it. God love America.

Considering that the White House's standard line regarding the breaking of any scandalous news has been, "We didn't know about it until we read it in this morning's paper"......

Here was a Caesar! When comes such another?
Here's a little bit of healing humor...MSNBC journalism: Krystal Ball: "Boy, you're a dumbass, aren't ya?" http://www.inquisitr.com/1358817/krystal-ball-msnbc-hostess-falls-victim-to-howard-stern-prank-caller-video/
The prank was juvenile and stupid (the guy who did it has pulled the same sort of stunt several times in the past)...but the unintended side-effect of demonstrating what clueless automatons both the staff and on-air personalities at MSNBC are was worth the price of admission. 8.)
...Let's see if President Obama can have a personality transplant by 11:30 AM today.
Nope. If the press conference was really scheduled for 11:30, the President was nearly half an hour late to it, spoke haltingly and was flat as a flounder. More gobbledegook about how Russia had to make decisions about how she would act, and his interesting analysis about the dangers of ripple effects and escalation from the actions of a country he dismissed as "a regional power acting out of weakness" just months ago. Now, back to the comedy... 9.) Swamp Fox - 07/18/2014

How cool can Obama really be if he orders what's supposed to be a good hamburger medium-well? That's what I thought of first. And to your point, you actually can't get a hamburger cooked your way in many places, by law. It's the nanny state that thinks you can't figure out what an accidental raw hamburger looks like when you take a bite after ordering it the way you should (medium rare at most). I don't know what the law is in Delaware, but I wonder if the President knows (If not, is he out of touch?) and if he does know, was he looking for special treatment, as he has several times in the past? :re: In NC, it's been a long time since you could order a hamburger your way. It's gotta be well- or medium-well, or you're SOL. So much for choice and diversity. I believe the law is still on the books. When I used to eat dinner out much more than I do now, I would go to my favorite bar and ask my favorite bartender for a burger. Knowing full well what was going to come out of the kitchen no matter what we asked for, she would take out her pad and pen and ask, "Chris, if you could get your hamburger the way you really want it, how would you want it?" I always thought that was the best. :-) I really miss that girl... 10.) DParker - 07/18/2014
It's not so bad here (at least not yet). City-level ordinances were passed in several municipalities mandated that the doneness for burgers be medium-well, unless the customer explicitly requests otherwise. Since pretty much every place asks how you want your greasy goodness cooked the effect was simply to establish a customer overrideable default.

I know there was some talk about easing things in NC a few years ago, but I don't know if it went anywhere. I pretty much gave up eating burgers out because of this law, so I'm not current on this. Sometimes with a wink and a nod you could get a place to give you a medium patty back in the day, but it was always a struggle with the waiter to get even that, or you had to be a regular.
Even with all of my girl Jane's efforts, I don't think I ever managed more than a handful of medium-rare burgers eating at the bar two to three nights a week for ten years. But in her defense, that had mostly to do with the law and with who was in the kitchen... She could have serious pull or even dirt on Jose or Pedro or Willie, and they'd still send out an overdone hamburger, LOL Also, it got to the point that I came to expect restaurant cooks to not know how to cook meat less than medium, so I learned the places where I had to order one level down from where I wanted my meat to arrive. That applied to hamburger places that seemed willing to work with you under the table, so to speak, as well as your average family restaurant that served steak. |
