I don't own one but boy I'd like too! I have a Beretta 92FS that I used to shoot pretty regularly but hadn't shot in several years. Then a female friend of mine asked me to take her shooting and I remembered how much fun it is! Anyway, several coworkers were kind enough to loan me pistols to try out including a few different 45s. I've always liked my 9mm but I really enjoy shooting those 45s, there's just something about the extra pop that's really cool! My question is this; What do you guys think of Commander sized 1911s? The ones I shot were either full sized or 3" compacts. I like shooting the compact better but they weren't too reliable. I've read that this is not unusual for a compact. I also did some reading on several different tweaks one can do to maximize reliability. I did some work on my Beretta that turned out quite well. My plan is to get a budget priced commander and do the gunsmith thing on it to make it as reliable as possible. Since I live in the only non-carry state, this won't likely become a carry gun so reliability isn't absolutely paramount. What do you guys think?

Don't be so sure it'll never be a carry piece. Per the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals IL will become a carry state by or before June. We just don't know yet what kinds of hoops they're going to make you jump through, and whether or not they've gotten tired yet of losing expensive court cases.

I'm kinda assuming they'll make it so difficult and expensive that it'll basically be no carry. But if things go well and this prospective gun works out then darn right it may become a carry piece!

You could always be an extreme optimist and hope that they dither around and fail to pass a workable solution by the 2nd week of June...because if that happens you automatically become a "constitutional carry" (open and/or concealed carry with no licensing required at all) state. C'mon, dream a little.

You will like the commander size 1911. I know people who conceal carry that size. I also know people who will flip their lids with the very idea of conceal carry a commander size 1911. In any event, just like the full size and 3", they are fun to shoot.
6.) DParker - 03/07/2013
Shoot, I know a few people who conceal carry full-size in small-of-the-back IWB holsters. The relative thinness of the 1911 seems to make that doable.
7.) Jon - 03/07/2013
I have carried my full size on my hip in a pancake holster under a t-shirt without any problems. Remember, everyone has a cell phone on their hip nowadays so something printing a little doesnt draw much attention.
8.) Triton Rich - 03/07/2013
Don't get me wrong here, I'm looking at a 4" 45 because I think they're really cool not because I think they're much more concealable.
9.) LoganCrane - 03/07/2013
The CQB I have has a commander slide and barrel on an officer frame. I do not like officer size guns but the 4"-4.25" commander is almost as accurate as a full size and just as nice to shoot. You will not be disappointed by a commander gun :tu:

Ok so we've done the easy part in deciding I want one. Now just gotta get some funds together. You know, when I mentioned to the wife that I wanted another gun, she said I don't get another pistol til I get her one. Looks like I'll be shopping for a "cute" semi auto first!
11.) KYJake - 07/27/2013
My .02 worth... When it comes to the "cute" semi-auto for the wife,if youre talking PDW you should look into one of the smaller framed 9mm. The smith & wesson shield and the Springfield xds are my two favorite aesthetically speaking and through dry fires. My wife actually likes my ruger sr9c better than her lcp380, but is impractical for her to carry due to size. The other two however would be more practical for her 5 ft and 120# frame. The length of the trigger on most of the pocket 380's is what makes them too undesirable for my liking. Each has their own opinion though, that's just mine.

Got an awesome 40th birthday present from my parents.

got to head over to a local gun shop and try on 1911's.

ended up picking a S&W 1911PD Gunsite Edition.

Shoots like a dream.

HA! The salesman said the same thing :wink

I had no problems with my full size 1991A1 with a 20 round mag in a shoulder holster under my leather jacket.
A belt holster worked good as well. Still needed a mid length jacket.
