Fought it for as long as I could............ finally had to break down and get glasses! :td:

Now that I'm in the acceptance stage, I have a few months to try and figure IF I will use them hunting. If so, how will they work with scope, bino's and bow sight.

Talked into progressive lenses to start. I'm not sure these will work in hunting scenario. I don't need the close-up reading ability. I'm thinking that if I decide to use the glasses that maybe a pair of wrap-around styled glasses with just distance correction will be the way to go. Would that provide clear peripheral vision?

Anybody out there have any suggestions.

I had to start wearing glasses much more a few years ago, because I DO need close-up reading ability all of a sudden. It had gotten to the point that non-progressive contacts would not cut it anymore.

I believe there is such a thing as progressive contacts, but I discussed my shooting (rifle and bow) with my doctor and told her I was not willing to give up any long-range vision, and whether that was a factor or not, I wound up with my traditional contacts for when I want them, and progressive lens glasses for when I want those. I wear one or the other.

You will have to see if your binocs or any that you purchase in the future are excellent, okay or horrible with glasses. It depends on eye relief and how they put the cups together etc. A birder's forum would be an excellent place to find out which binocs are good with glasses and which aren't. They will know the high-end binos, especially. But you can find other good information elsewhere, too. Some brands are known for being eyeglass-friendly, but I think it probably comes down to each individual model and you in the real world.


I've shot bows and rifles (scoped rifles) with the glasses and haven't noticed any issues. I can't say your results will be the same. With a bow, I'd make sure your sights shoot to the same place either way, and if not, pick a method (glasses or no).

I DO NOT like to hunt with my glasses on. I've done it only to try it out, and by accident. My glasses are so comfortable that I don't even think about whether I'm wearing them, and I've forgotten to switch to contacts before heading out a few times, LOL.

Your peripheral vision and looking behind you is severely affected in the negative direction with the glasses/progressive lenses. Or at least that's the way it is for me. You will have trouble with any game or bikini-clad Texas honey that sneaks in behind you. :wink

They have Texas honeys out there, don't they?

Have had to wear glasses/contacts most of my life. Rifle and archery I never really saw much of a difference, though occasionally glasses frames can get knocked out of the way when shouldering a rifle in a hurry. Also need to be sure that the screws holding the lenses in are always tight, sucks to try and find a lens that fell out in the woods.
Binos are always the biggest problem, getting a good eye relief is a pain in the neck. Like Swampy said, check out birders forums, and personally I prefer to buy in store where I can test before buying.
Given the option I'd rather hunt with contacts than glasses, loss of peripheral vision and concern for breaking the glasses being the primary reasons.

Swampy touched on the core of the problem with progressives as I am finding out. You can see good straight ahead but have to turn your head to see clearly side to side. The only reason I will consider using glasses while hunting is if they help field judge a deer at 200 yards! That's why I'm thinking about single-lens glasses for distance correction only. And, if they are wrap-around, will the peripheral vision be clear?

(I also have to see how they work with my peep sight)

day 1) all the 10 or 12 ants from California seemed excited to get to farming..
day 2) they seemed to dig some halfass tunnels
day 3) put a drop of sugarwater with an eye drop inside the farm and all hell broke loose
day 4) there was no production from the ants..they seem lethargic
day 5) threw a local black ant into the farm and see if they would become friends and help with the farming
day 6) black ant was dead. plus the whole pack just didn't seem right
day 7) all the ants are dieing off
day 8) I ended my scientific study

Depends on your particular eyes, I suppose. I have good long-range vision with regular ol' contact lenses or regular glasses, so there's nothing the doc can do to help me with that, more than she's already done. The point of progressives is so that you have both near and long vision optimized in one lens, but as far as I know you're always going to have a problem where extreme peripheral, and > 4 o'clock and > 8 o'clock vision (to the side behind you) will be unacceptable for hunting without head movement.

You'd have to ask the doc if a wrap-around style will do what you want. I'll bet there might be something out there, but the lens might be expensive. You might not need wrap-around for peripheral in the real world, if your game is usually not in your lap. I never worry about my peripheral vision with glasses unless hunting up close.

we need to get back on the bugs topic... i mean who hasn't put red ants and some black ants in a jar? the carnage after a day of battle ..I wouldn't want anyone to experience that..it was brutal..the few survivors in the jar I would have to throw a firecracker in there to end the suffering..

I have some little black biting buggers that run across my clothesline from where it's pegged to a tree over to where it's pegged to the house. It's where I hang my hunting stuff to air out. I'll go out, check the line---Ok, good, no ants---throw the clothes and packs on and come back later. Pull a shirt and put it on and DAMN!---Bit me! Little suckers are all over my gear! :rage:

Usually I can keep my feet out of fire ant mounds...It's the sneaky little clothesline bastards that get me!
