1.) Swamp Fox - 05/20/2014
On-line edition:
New Jersey is one of the top 20 states for turkey hunting? With a population of 23,000, and a kill last year of 3,387 birds, the highest ever? Really? This pot-smoking thing might have gone too far. Sexiest Meat-Eater Contest: Lame and more than a little weird line-up of contestants, and lame writing. Kate Middleton? Because she went/goes fox hunting (chase) every once in a while? And her sexiest moment, according to the editors?: "Every moment she's been in the media spotlight since dating Prince William."---Really? Really? That's what you came up with? Print edition: Two pages (with illustrations!---actually half the space) on how to skin a deer with a golf ball, because "...nowadays deer hunters are busy. We don't have time for the agonizingly slow process of hanging a deer with gambrels and peeling off the skin, slice by slice." Sidebars promoting the benefits of Remington Core Lokt bullets and the .220 Swift (There's some news!), and an article on customizing the 10-22 (more news that's never been done before). (both from the June//July issue) Also, off the top of my head, two articles in the last six months on "The Sins of Outdoor TV" for which the author (also the editor) apparently gets a lot of fist bumps and pats on the back, which must feel good... Shall I go on? Discuss among yourselves until I return... 2.) DParker - 05/20/2014
OK, so they wanted to throw the Brits a bone with the Kate Middleton entry. What I don't understand is how Melissa Bachman is getting 73.5% of the vote for sexiest of the female candidates. I mean, she's certainly not an unattractive young woman, and she's quite a huntress. But, c'mon...sexier than Theresa Vail, Tiffany Lakosky, Sarah Palin, Jennifer Lawrence, et al? I don't think so, Tim.
As for the Core Lokt, .220 Swift and Ruger 10/22 customization coverage...well...not everyone subscribing to hunting magazines has been doing this for so long that all of this is old hat to them. The knowledge/information that some of us take for granted is still new to people who are just getting into hunting/shooting. If hunting magazines restricted their content to interesting new products, new research and new (or at least little known) hunting techniques they'd be reduced to not much more than pamphlets. I agree that the stated rationale for the skin-a-deer-with-a-Titleist-Pro-V1 thing was pretty lame. But it's still a pretty neat trick. 3.) Swamp Fox - 05/20/2014
LOL....
Yes, I agree with your point about old hat, and I considered that before I posted. It's the reason I didn't deride the article on how hog hunting is on the rise (even global) nor the article on iconic .22 rifles. Both old hat. However, when viewed alongside those items, one could have chosen any of the five to explain the same way I did, or the way that you have. That leaves a 72-page magazine heavy on advertising with not much meat in it for anyone with, say, more than ten years in hunting camp. That, I would say, is a joke of a hunting magazine. As far as the sexiest meat-eater thing, I know they've been doing it for a while and I know it's a response to PETA's sexiest vegetarian contest, and I know there's no accounting for taste. I will point out that half the contestants are dudes, though. What's up with that? :wink 4.) Swamp Fox - 05/20/2014
By the way, I got a headache reading about all the work/thinking you had to do to find the right place to use the golf ball method, and how you had to wrestle the animal into position with the help of your vehicle (and a buddy!)...
:bang: :p 5.) luv2bowhunt - 05/20/2014
I read somewhere the other day (wish I could remember where), that PA was one of the top 3 turkey hunting destinations in the country.
What a joke. If you enjoy hunting in a crowd of people for turkeys that only gobble once on roost and then never say another word, and calling sessions that only bring in the occasional rookie hunter, than this IS your state. Where do they get their research from anyway? Oh and yes, Peterson's is a joke. 6.) Swamp Fox - 05/20/2014
What would be more helpful to new hunters would be an explanation how if you skin your deer while it's fresh, you don't need the golf ball method.
I believe I'd spend more time arranging the truck, the rope and the golf ball just right than I would peeling the skin off with my usual "agonizingly slow process." :re: And I'm no Mack the Knife. This is a deer processor down the road from Camp Swampy...Video's been on here before...I think I might have posted it---There's another guy nearby in the opposite direction with a slightly different technique that's been on youtube longer...Amost as fast, considering time to crank the deer off the floor. Pa. made Peterson's list...But then again, with a list of the top 20 states, almost every other state did, too. :wink
8.) Swamp Fox - 05/20/2014
Or over a third of the states did, depending on who's counting....

So many questions.
I'll say no, yes, IDK, yes, and yes. 13.) DParker - 05/20/2014

I get it now.
Nope don't read outdoor mags or watch the shows either. They'er mostly product endorsments and the same old stuff. Over and over again. 16.) Swamp Fox - 05/20/2014
The best ones aren't, and a few of them even manage to survive.
17.) Hunter - 05/21/2014
Used to read them all years ago but Peterson's was always my least favorite.

Well hunting magazines are like golf magazines (I don't play but am easily amused) in that every issue explains how to hold the clubs and/or swing. You would think that by now people might no that stuff already. Do we all look at a hunting magazine and say, "Wow, finally an issue that tells me how to sharpen a knife or make a fire?"
The skinning a deer (olympic speed skinning event) always makes me scream. It reminds me of all the chopper/blender commercials that tout the speed at which you can create a meal. You can chop all your vegetables in a matter of seconds. What the dufus doesn't quite get is that all the vegetables are already cleaned, washed, hulled, stacked and sliced in smaller portions (to allow the fruit or vegetable to enter the device). So along comes Mr. No-It-All and grabs a cheese cube and pepper slice and a half a mushroom, puts it into the chopper, makes a few motions and viola, omlette. Skinning a hanging deer in a well-lit, temperature controlled room with a sharp knife and plenty of room to work wouldn't take anyone long at all. And if I didn't do it in under 2 minutes, it might be because I'm taking my time, admiring my work, and wait for it... enjoying the whole process. dismount soap box 19.) bluecat - 05/21/2014

It seems to me they used to be a lot better, but then you could say that about almost any magazine these days.. I honestly can't say what I thought about them because I probably never had a subscription, but I used to pull magazines willy nilly off the shelf and used to read a lot of different ones. There was a golden age of outdoor magazines for guys with a few years under their belt, but maybe it was so long ago that no one remembers. Stay tuned for my rant about bowhunting magazines, coming eventually...:wink 21.) Swamp Fox - 05/21/2014
