But one (perhaps the only) benefit of getting older is that I just don't care anymore. After being bombarded with commercials for various brands of hard cider, and with the weather rapidly warming up here I decided to see what the hype was all about and try some. After doing a little reading to get the benefit of others' experiences I opted for the Woodchuck 12-bottle variety pack so as not form my judgement based on any one particular style. The Woodchuck pack includes 3 bottles each of their Amber, Granny Smith, 802 Dark & Dry and "Cider Maker's Choice" (3 bottles of we-aren't-going-to-tell-you-which-one-we're-including-in-this-box). In this instance the surprise bottles turned out to be their Crisp style.
I have to say that with the exception of the Granny Smith, which I found to have an excessively tart bite to it...just like an under-ripe Granny Smith apple...I rather liked all of them. At about 5% ABV, a little sweet (but only barely so in the case of the 802) and with a level of carbonation that's far less than that of beer they make for a good warm weather thirst quencher. I later tried an Angry Orchard Crisp Apple on tap at a local restaurant, and thought it had a tart bite that was similar to the Woodchuck Granny Smith, but was otherwise quite drinkable. Because of the sugar content these things contain anywhere from 120 - 200 calories / 12 oz bottle...just FYI in case you're watching your girlish figure. 2.) billy b - 05/06/2014
I've been wondering about some of that hard cider, I might try some.
3.) Swamp Fox - 05/07/2014
I've had some. I don't remember what kind(s?). Also some Mike's Hard Lemonade. Very tasty on a hot day.
My favorite is Smirnoff Mojito, though. I have to ration myself when I'm fishing. Bright sun, heat, humidity and one too many mojitos coolers you can drink like water are a recipe for taking an unexpected trip overboard, LOL. I know Luv2 is a big fan of hard cider. I believe he makes it in his root cellar. 4.) DParker - 05/07/2014
I know Luv2 is a big fan of hard cider. I believe he makes it in his root cellar.
I had an uncle in the TN hills that made hard cider, but his was a substantially higher octane. Very smooth, and you didn't really realize what you had until after you pounded down a mason jar full and then tried to stand up...with emphasis on the tried part. 5.) bluecat - 05/07/2014
Just recently tried Mike's Hard Apple Cider. It was okay, but it definately didn't hold a candle to the other Mike's products.
I'm not worried about the calories DP, I have a thigh master. 6.) Jon - 05/07/2014
I too, don't care anymore....wait, never did.....and have been sampling the hard cider beers from various distilleries. I'll try this brand next and see what it brings. Thanks DP
7.) Ventilator - 05/07/2014
Whats up with you Texans these days? Drinking cider.lol
Actually , I used to love to drink regular apple cider when I was a kid. I do like the Smirnoff`s and Mike`s lemonade Swampy mentioned. Ive heard about some Dicken`s Cider that is supposed to be really good as well. :tu: 8.) NEBigAl - 05/07/2014
Give Magner's cider a try. Its irish style and almost has a little whiskey bite to it, its great!!! Its kind of hard to find, but its good stuff.
Whats up with you Texans these days? Drinking cider.lol
We wanted to leave the Zima for everyone else. Just as an addendum for those looking to try one/some of the Woodchucks I would rate the 4 that I tried thusly, in descending order from most to least favorite on their own (unpaired with any food):

Amber
Crisp
802
Granny Smith
Depending on my mood and what I was eating at the time (if anything) I might actually prefer the 802 over the others because it was the driest. But if I was having it with something sweet like a dessert then I'd opt for the Crisp instead, with it having a good balance of both sweet and tart. But straight up on its own, the Amber was best. I didn't like the Granny Smith at all. Just too tart. 10.) Ventilator - 05/07/2014
I should draw my Georgia gator tag for this fall. Which would you recommend for a long night of gator hunting in the South Georgia swamp? Need one that wont make us too drowsy and still need to be able to shoot relatively straight. Would be good not to fall in also.

Great stuff!!!!:tu: 13.) luv2bowhunt - 05/15/2014
Hard cider is my favorite beverage of all time. Just sayin'.
We have several local options, my favorite being Jacks' Peach Hard Cider from Hauser Estate Winery. You probably can't get that unless you visit the area. For national brands you've got to try the Angry Orchard Hard Cider. Superior to Woodchuck in every category in my humble opinion. ........I now slip back into the shadows..........hahaha 14.) bluecat - 05/15/2014

See, I knew he hadn't been killed in a horrible physical therapy session...
I told them they'd have to try harder, but did they listen? 16.) bluecat - 05/15/2014
I think the nurse came in, saw him on his little clackety box and turned his meds up a bit. Things will calm down now.
17.) bluecat - 05/15/2014
Swampy, remember the good 'ol days when you could come on HC and there were so many people fighting and getting banned you couldn't hardly read all the posts?
And when the country solved its energy crisis by filling up tires to the correct pressure? And when someone who participated in the Boston Tea Party was considered an American hero. I miss those days. 18.) Deerminator - 05/15/2014
Remamber whan we sponcered that make a wish thing for that young hunter

Yea.
20.) Swamp Fox - 05/15/2014
Well, as Crookedeye has so astutely pointed out, the country is going down the sewer...
Obama was blowing hot air at a Walmart the other day, celebrating the solar panels. I guess he's celebrated gayness enough for a while. (If Obama had a son, he'd look like Michael Sam, right?) In 2008, he said he wouldn't shop at Walmart, looking for a big wet kiss from the unions and the crowd that hates everyday low prices. I'd like to see the old guys come back. I'd name names except I'd probably leave some people out by accident...I don't want any hurt feelings... 21.) billy b - 05/15/2014
I see you lurking Luv2:tap:
22.) Swamp Fox - 05/15/2014
Hey, Billy! Speaking of physical therapy, how's everything coming along?
23.) Deerminator - 05/15/2014
Yea Billy, How's it hang'n
24.) bluecat - 05/15/2014
I'm not worried about Billy. He is a tough Texan. He will come through this no problem. It's Luv2 that I'm worried about. He uses those little heart-shaped soaps. Need I say more?
25.) luv2bowhunt - 05/15/2014
I can see nothing has changed around here. Of course if you really want to put the blame where it belongs, point your boney little fingers towards upstate NY.
billy I didn't see you in rehab. We must have been scheduled for different days. I'm doing well, made it several miles through the woods in turkey season so far, no incidents. Only wanted to shoot another hunter once so far. For PA public land that's really good. Normally I would've thought of having an 'accident' 4 or 5 times this far into the season. 26.) Swamp Fox - 05/15/2014
I don't know...Billy could be getting sponge baths from ugly nurses and he'd never say anything...Big tough guy...You don't want somebody going through something like that alone...

Luv2, if you had to pick a week when the birds are 1) gobbling and 2) responsive to calling in your area, which week would it be?

What about after about mid-May?
The story here so far is gooble once or twice on roost, then all is quiet. Really slow the first weekend, 5/3. Things picked up for alot of hunters the next weekend. They seem to be a bit behind other years, when the first week is always the best. It's been like rifle season here for Spring goobler. If you don't get one the first day or week your not going to get one. This year seems different. Should have pursued one opening morning I guess, but it would have required crossing the Appalachian Yuppie Trail, and they are militant here about hunters on/near/around the trail. Also, it would have added a half mile hike down the mountain, across the raging small stream, and then try and get above him, while avoiding the Yuppie SS troopers who hug trees and chipmunks on the trail. He was the only bird I heard that was asking to be killed. Goobled for around 45 minutes and then moved off the opposite direction. 38.) Swamp Fox - 05/15/2014
