1.) Deerminator - 04/13/2014
Trout opened up The 1st. The water conditions have been high, fast and looks like choclate milk.
Things have calmed down. I caught these 2 fast and I was done. We can only keep 2 fish over 12". Then 3 more under 12" total of 5. Those fish were 12 and 14". I knew they were stacked up in this hole. Caught another one, a 16"er and had to let it go. LACY!,,,, move 2.) Triton Rich - 04/14/2014

9.) Ventilator - 04/14/2014
We caught quite a few bass over the last two weekends. A couple pretty decent ones, including this 5lber yesterday. Really nice weather has the lakes super crowded but great to be out finally.
Stripers are in, do they taste like bass or another fish.
Never ate one
Well, they're Striped Bass, so....yeah. :-) 22.) Deerminator - 04/14/2014
So they taste like a small mouth or BIG mouth, but striped.
23.) bluecat - 04/14/2014
I think that is a wiper, which is a striped bass, white bass hybrid.
They all are mild and flavorful. 24.) bluecat - 04/14/2014
...and taste like chicken.
25.) DParker - 04/14/2014
So they taste like a small mouth or BIG mouth, but striped.
They're all pretty similar (though I was just being a Shakesperean "What is in a name?" smart-ass anyway). :wink 26.) crookedeye - 04/14/2014
its a white meat that's flaky but yet suttle, it has the texture of a lobster tail.
27.) bluecat - 04/14/2014
As I once told my dad who accused me of being a smart-ass, "it's better than being a dumb-ass."
That didn't go over too well. 28.) Deerminator - 04/14/2014
:laugh::beer:
29.) billy b - 04/14/2014
Stripers, hybride & sand bass all have a red stripe that runs the legnth of the filet, it is strong in flavor, just trim it off & it does taste very similar to a black bass.
30.) Swamp Fox - 04/15/2014
If we get a few warming days in Jan and Feb, we catch some of the biggest crappie of the year then. I usually don't get really cranked up for fishing until squirrel season and some hog hunting opportunities dry up in March. I got out a few days for them but the weather and water conditions were mostly pretty rough until just recently.
I've been slaying the bream in a blackwater gravel quarry pond the last few weeks. Haven't fished it in a few years and the fish are not as big as they used to be, or I'm just missing the bigger ones right now. The larger bass are starting to show up. The smaller ones will keep you busy on ultralight tackle. I'm keeping a lot of fish since I think the pond's gotten overpopulated. I don't usually keep black bass, not that I have anything against them on the plate, the way some people do. There's just so much pressure on them, especially the larger ones. But out of this pond I'm taking some bass out, along with every bream right now. When I get into the bigger bass and the hand-sized bream, those guys will go back in the water. I like to do a ceviche, especially with small bass and bream. Billy's right: If a fish has a bloodline, cut it out and chow down. I like a saltwater striper better on the plate than a freshwater cousin, but they're both good. 31.) DParker - 04/15/2014
The smaller ones will keep you busy on ultralight tackle.
I've fished for stuff ranging all the way up to Columbia River sturgeon and various salt-water fish (including deep sea), but small pan fish on ultralight gear is still the most fun, IMHO.

Billy's right: If a fish has a bloodline, cut it out and chow down.
Among other tasty things, I used to catch buckets full of bonito (small member of the tuna family) from the (no longer in existence) Aliso Pier just south of Laguna Beach, CA back in the late '80s. At first I couldn't understand how people could eat them until one of the old timers on the pier educated me on the whole blood line removal thing, as well as the trick of marinating them in Italian dressing before dusting them in flour and pan sauteing them.. Pier fishing is easily the thing I miss most about the two years I spent in southern CA. There's nothing quite like beating the crowd by getting there before sun up, with nothing but the sound of the surf for company. Extremely peaceful and relaxing. Not all that dissimilar from sitting in your stand waiting for the sun to come up...except you smell a lot worse, if you're lucky. 32.) Swamp Fox - 04/15/2014
